Picked up this beauty of a case on eBay this weekend. I'll eventually make a wartime and 50's era S-K set, but I really liked the color and 1/2" and 1/4" combination of this box. Now to start sourcing the period SK-Wayne tools as I don't think I have any in my S-K spares tub.

From looking through historical sales, the 1/4" sockets are: 3/16, 7/32, 1/4, 9/32, 1/4, 5/16, 11/32, 3/8, 5/16, 7/16, 1/2. The 1/2" sockets are: 7/16, 1/2, 19/32, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16, 7/8, 15/16. Also included were: green spintite handle, 1/2 ratchet (42470), 1/4 ratchet (40970), 1/2 3" extension (40161), and a 13/16 spark plug socket (4426).

I pulled this poor little box out of the Habitat scrap-metal bin today and it was so ugly that it was freee!

It's thin enough that I just bent it back with my fingers. I should probably do a little better job, but it closes fine now.

I just scrubbed it with a shortened-bristle tooth-brush and some Boraxo hand soap.

That's the remnant of a bar of LAVA soap beside it. I like using that on wrenches and stuff. The lanolin makes the water bead off when I'm done scrubbing.

There's not much paint left on the outside of this box, but that doesn't mean it's garbage. Not to me anyway. It measures 8-1/4" long, by 2-14" wide, by 1-1/4" tall. It's older than I am.

Heck no. Especially when it's full of tools and the spots where the crinkle finish has been worn off the inside won't be as noticeable! :) Nice save.

(I have thrown boxes I find in the wild away. When they truly are too far gone with cancerous rust. Sometimes before I come home. But I would never leave the badge behind!)

I picked up a few S-K sockets to fill out sets on eBay. I was surprised to see this 15mm 1/2” drive deep socket stamped France. Probably made during the Facom ownership period.

Anyone aware of S-K making a gold plated ratchet? Like a "Tool Award" or Anniversary type item? I have this pic and don't remember where i got the photo, I'm pretty sure it was a screen grab.goldsk.jpg
What’s the small head in the upper left of this pic?

Those are the best ones.
The early, wartime, and immediate postwar stuff seems to be clearly favored here, but I have noted that people outside of the GJ vintage board tend to hold Wayne era stuff in higher regard. I always leave it behind in the wild without a second thought, but lately I've been wondering if I should start grabbing it to flip.

Back before S-K got bought out by the Chinese company that currently owns them, they would warranty even the oldest S-K marked tools but I’ve been told that they wouldn’t warranty Wayne tools. I personally never tried to warranty any so that may have been a myth. I have so much S-K stuff now that if I got into keeping all the Wayne tools I run across as well, the West Coast would probably fall into the Pacific Ocean. 😉
From what I can see, anything with any kind of S-K markings, Wayne or otherwise, is currently going for plenty of money on eBay.

I had a quarter inch drive socket set that was Wayne era. The broaching were so off center that I turned away from Wayne era, deciding that the quality couldn’t be that great if they were so slipshod in production.

Looking forward to seeing them. These arrived in the last couple of days. An early patent 3/8” drive ratchet, a couple wartime sockets, a short extension, a fairly early 12 point deep socket and a hex socket missing the hex, which I will fix by cutting up an Allen wrench.

I was pleased to spot this early 1/4” (5/16” diameter) drive crossbar. The seller didn’t really know what it was, which was reflected in a very reasonable price. These are often missing from sets

You should see some of the nut drivers I have, on the note of nut drivers, do any of you fellers have sk nut drivers? I have most of a set, I’m missing 1/4-11/32. My grandpa gave me them a few years ago. They look like Vaco’s to me. If anyone has a pic of ones they own or a catalog with them in it I would love to see it. Sorry guys pics will be tomorrow.

Don, sorry to disappoint, but what we have here is an abuse survivor. It‘s 40954. Sadly, pliers must have been used on it. I have a couple better examples stashed away.

Thanks for the pictures. Looks postwar. I also have some in that condition cleaned up and put in sets. If you plan to throw it away, please consider throwing it my way. 😃

Tommy, I haven’t run across any S-K nutdrivers. Please post pictures of yours.
Thanks,
-Don
