Mundy is a forgotten author today. He was one of the biggest before his death in 1940, with a movie made from one of his books - King of the Khyber Rifles. Lots of mysticism, good history and a strong knowledge of Central Asia, he was one of the great pulp writers, now sadly forgotten. He has been one of my favorites since I first worked in used bookstores, originally picked up as my best friend's middle name is Talbot.

I thought the hammer might be an Estwing but I couldn’t confirm so thank you for the mental confirmation. I was real excited about the sockets especially a few Snap-On ones because I’m piecing together a couple 3/8” drive socket sets and I was missing those sizes so it was a perfect match. Also I’m assuming your first name is Forrest which is also my first name so nice to meet a fellow Forrest 🤝 doesn’t happen very often
Yes it it’s. Nice to meet you, too, Forrest!

Nothing special, just keeping the thread alive. $7 for all of it. The DeWalt charger is $40 new. The wizard tape measure is worthless, but cool. Should clean up quick. The Sargent & co pliers were just too neat to pass up. Not rusty, just cruddy.

@Private Lugnutz -
Modern Specialty Co. on the box cutter.
That "St. Claire Dairy" widget looks like somebody re-purposed a button hook! (But there's way too much metal at the business end for a button hook.)

@bmwrd0 -
that drill index is fabulous.
great choice on the literature.

Expensive weekend for me.

I have been looking for a row crop tractor for a while. I really wanted a 50ish hp Ford diesel but being a cheapskate and picky besides I could never find the perfect deal.

A good friend turned me on to a Massey Ferguson Super 90. I will be the 3rd owner. It has everything I was looking for 70+ HP, power steering, wide front end, live power, new back tires, and the price was about half of what tractors are bringing around here.

IMG_5687.jpg

Not a great picture. I will add some better ones later when I get it home.

I also got a great deal on some forklift liquid propane tanks on Facebook Marketplace. My welder is an LP Miller Trailblazer and I use it as a generator as well. Should be enough gas to get me through a 1 day power outage now. Not really a tool, but powers a tool.

20230108_131417.jpg

I took my wife along to pick up the tanks so we had breakfast at our favorite TexMex place and hit some of her favorite antique stores. I found a couple of things.

A couple in the left behind category. Both $125

I love bmw's drill index. It is fun to see a local connection on something like that. I have a chisel with a Portland, Oregon connection, but it was a dead end researching it.

I have a set of license plate frames from the local, small-town Ford dealer. I keep my eye out for more, but have never seen another. These came off a truck that was bought new by the family business in 1959.

Haven't posted recently, here are some fun stuff I came across.
1946 Audels New Automotive Guide, Sherlock Holmes anthology, a aftershave bottle shaped like a fuse I couldn't leave, 2 nice tins, an ammeter, 2 vintage tubes, Worlds Fair souvenir box, cast / brass sprinkler, Jeff Gordon blow up car to flip, a unused Lodge dutch oven and skillet, neat Stanley Rule and Level level with adjustable vials via a screw, leather strop and ruler from local defunct newspaper.
Also bought these measuring stick with strange markings.
Anybody familiar with these ?
Also a LYMAN (?) square.

its a ruler for figuring board feet of lumber while on the log. Someone way smarter than I will have to explain HOW to use it. I just recognize it for what it is.

HAHA! I know, right? Go figure! What makes it all the more ironic is I can't beg my wife to go to a flea market with me. But I only got brief, rare glimpses of that person in her mom. In her good moods. She and my wife were always fighting about something. I could count on one hand the number of times I was in the house, but it was crazy. They lived in the kitchen, basement, one bedroom, and a family room that led to an old-fashioned pool out back. Every other room in the house was full of stuff from the antiques store. You'll know what I mean when I say that she probably didn't even know she had the Plomb J100 keychain screwdriver. It was with an Elks key fob and a Mason's key fob with a tiny bone-scale knife and other "smalls." She would buy boxes at auctions without knowing what was in it. My wife was afraid her mom might've thrown all her stuff out, out of spite, but it was all there.

My wife said there was a placard over the top of that that had the name of her mom's shop, "Marie's". Long gone, apparently, but you can see where it was attached, taped or glued apparently.
Do you still have the Masonic keychain??

You use a particular line (horizontal line, not one of the markings) based on the length of the log. You then check the diameter of the small end of the log with the individual line and it reads out he number of board feet in the log. This is why the same number repeats at different places on the stick.

Since we got a one day break from the rain, we went to the last hour of the second day of a 2 day Berkeley estate sale. I didn’t expect much so I wasn’t disappointed. There was a blank price tag on the cheek of the ball pein and I was hoping for a familiar brand but it was unmarked. At least whoever did the rehandle did a decent job. The center punch is a rusty Thorsen and the little cold chisel is a Wilde. The patch kit was kind of cool. I guess it was worth the 20 minutes. 38925E63-E26E-45CF-96B7-AF95879BB688.jpeg76BF6477-818B-4B18-9549-28D542736745.jpeg5870A38C-527F-4C7E-B10E-C526DBBC30E2.jpeg8CF55FA1-B162-4983-AEAE-BAFDCFB3252F.jpegC598A71B-1129-49A0-AF95-18CB70330464.jpegAB6ADEAC-6727-42A0-8BD8-A841422BCC43.jpegC149E61A-5A65-4F59-AECB-4E104C702AFF.jpeg

Grabbed this Mac roller at an estate sale on Friday. It was the 2nd sale at the location, the 1st being in Dec of 2022, but somehow I missed the listing. Anyways, this roller was still there covered by random garage debris and a small, well worn, homeowner grade tool chest. After digging it out and taking a good look at it in the daylight, I decided it was in good condition just in need of a serious cleaning/lube/polish. It's a MB9200 from 2004, 8 drawer, friction slides, 39" H x 33" W x 18 D. Lock cylinder is gone and replaced by a large bolt but it still operates the lock bar properly so hopefully a new cylinder can be installed and the angle iron hasp and multiple rivets removed. Just need a warm day soon so I can remove the drawers and give it a proper bath outside with some mild degreaser and the garden hose.
I offered $50 and the seller/agent accepted.

As some might remember I picked up a few vidmar cabinets with just shelves and doors on them at the end of last year and I spent some time over the holidays reorganizing the shop to fit them.
Well first haul of 2023 ended up being some more Vidmar items but with drawers this time so I’m back to playing a new game of Tetris in my workshop.

A 45” wide and 44” tall 5 drawer.

The other 2 are 30” wide, one is 44” tall and the other 33”.
AF740D8B-FC41-4D60-BACD-CCB298B6F795.jpeg
Plus a bunch of sorting bins and dividers were tucked in the bottom of the smallest one and I also found the keys for it laying under the bottom drawer.

Ended up paying $400 total.

Welcome to the thread! That Stanely soft face hammer is interesting since the whole head is the same material. Nice find!

@83VillageRepair: Congrats on the tractor! Sounds like your patience has paid off. I know too well about looking for (but not finding, or just missing) great deals on a specific type of tractor (a backhoe, in my case). Good luck with it!

No kidding. Even at $100, that was a steal.

You have good taste! Probably nothing valuable, but I have a set of those brass Master padlocks, they've been flawless, outdoors on a boat trailer, for at least 25 years. Just need a little lube every now and again.

Jeff,
Here's a few of the items that look Masonic to me. It's really hard to get a photo of the key chain stone. Someone who's into jewelry might know what the substance is, but it disappears with no light, and turns either dark blue or turquoise depending on the direction of the light.

That's my goal as well. While making space I already started a "need to sell" pile and a few items have made their way to the shed for scrap.

Lugz - the St Clair do-dad is indeed a household item: a milk cap lifter. I have one somewhere. I do not recall using one, even in childhood, which makes me think it may precede the waxed cardboard daisy lid with the heavier cardboard disc centers. Or maybe that is what it’s for and we were just too uncivilized to use one. There was a local dairy farm 1/8mile from my childhood home, and we got milk in returnable glass half-gallons there.
St Clair (Schuylkill County) is in the anthracite coal region of PA and is also a source of whitish fossil ferns in gray slate matrix. I picked some there a few years ago, and see them sometimes at flea markets, as well.
I agree that NJ is not part of New England, and neither is PA, though there was a portion of PA claimed by Connecticut, leading to the Yankee-Pennamite War.
