My memory of milk containers of the 1950's was a square one made of waxed cardboard that had a seam at the peak of a ridge on the centerline of the top. To open, you spread apart the seam on the side marked "open" and then fan out the resulting wings. By manipulating the "wings" you then got the center section to extend out into a v-shaped spout. The spout folded up but didn't reseal the carton. These came in pints, quarts, half-gallon, and gallon sizes. There was a miniature version for school lunches/single servings.

Half-pint.
(Free association: Laura Ingalls Wilder as portrayed by Melissa Gilbert.
And, “This, my friend, is a pint.” “It comes in pints?! I’m getting one.” “You’ve had a whole half already!”)
If our collective memories are at all accurate, I think milk packaging must have evolved at different rates in different regions. My earliest memories of milk containers begin in the mid-1960s, but I’ve already forgotten what kind of container I finished last night with a sleeve of Graham crackers (the wrapping of which is the same color, but utterly different material from the far-easier-to-open waxed paper of past eras).

I ate a good deal of Froot Loops in the mid 1980s. And Capn Crunch. Mostly Saturday and Sunday morning hangover paliatives, till I could drag myself down to Pizza Hut brunch to rebalance my electrolites.
At least you kept control of yourself and did not slide down that slippery slide to harder things.
Alcohol is often the GATEWAY drug to (shudder)...Aspirin. From there it's a quick trip Boo Berries.

Working a remodel at an elder day facility, I remember we got talking to one of the guys and he recounted his first job at a milk delivery.
Not as a driver.
He was still small, so they set him up with a ladel and pitcher of liquid lead. His specialty was to climb in the truck tanks and relead the seams!

LEAD in the milk??? WOW.

That’s what I had in the late 60’s early 70’s
Often they weren't resealed at all, or poorly. Which, after nearly 50-ish some years, led to various health associations deeming them un-hygienic, leading to changes in glass bottles and caps, and eventually, to new packaging altogether.
Thinking back, milk was more shelf stable in someways. I want to say it wasn’t even cold when delivered?

The process we use now to kill dangerous bacteria and other stuff, requires us to keep the milk refrigerated immediately.

Pretty sure they still use those (half-pints) in schools, but I do remember them being up to half gallon sized.

That's why my reaction was what it was...

I’ve read that lead could have led to the Roman empires fall. See what I did there? I crack me up..lol

Seriously, they used it for pipes, utensils, dish ware ect ect. Imagine an entire population with severe lead poisoning.

I won’t get specific, as to stick to the no politics rule, but now imagine a modern day country, who supplies another modern day country with almost everything. Now imagine the supplying country using lead in their products? Conspiracy theory? Maybe? Maybe not? Lol

Haha, lead? that pales in comparison with playing with Mercury in my "yute". We used to open up golf balls to find the Mercury and "play" with it. Fortunately, I was clearly smart enough (no lead in my surroundings) and currently in relatively good health to have not ingested it.....

They used to pass it around to us in science class, so we could roll it around in our bare hands. :scared:

Ahem, while I do appreciate how the dairy receptacles and various opening implements are helping to keep this thread moving, I think we need to move on and return to garage sale finds so as to not completely derail the thread.

Anyone else find anything cool or have any good stops mapped out for this weekend?

The new boss is grumpy. :p123
I am lactose intolerant 😂👍

No not really. My personal side doesn’t really mind the current thread direction as it keeps the thread refreshed. However the moderator/ host side tells me I need to gently redirect the thread so we don’t risk another thread derailing like the “great Jerry can gauge/type discussion “ that temporarily overtook a past thread.

Agreed, although, for me, one of the redeeming qualities of these garage sale threads, is the historical lessons I learn. But I digress.

I will be making some rounds tomorrow, and hoping that something interesting pops up for the weekend. Not holding out much luck though.

What is the date on that swap? I might be out of town that weekend per the wife.

This sale is coming up this weekend, and somewhat near you:

That would be one interesting sale! Reminds me of the time the wife went to James Fletcher's Estate Sale. He was the NASA administrator during the transition from Apollo to Skylab to the Shuttle. She brought home alot of NASA s**t.

Maybe I can push the tiller a little for Smoke.

This is my busy season at work and I’m raking in gobs of overtime for at least the next few months, so fleas, estates, and yard sales are a no go for me at the moment. However, I spend a lot of time on the interwebz and what better place to spend OT $$ than the internet.

I recently found a slim “between the studs” wall safe on a local hunting forum I frequent. Now, some may not think it’s a tool, but in my case it’s the equivalent of a toolbox. Lets just say I got a smokin deal on it.

Another day while I was working (posting here in this thread, haha) I came across something I’ve had on my list for a while while watching the auction site. I saw a Blue Point Supreme S-2225 DOE and jumped on it. It’s a one year only production (according to my information). I paid asking price and was giddy about it. Hey, when you see it, buy it. Right?

I’ve got another Blue Point Supreme DOE on its way from a fellow GJ member in answer to a wanted ad I posted here on GJ. I’m expecting that tomorrow and I’ll post it up after fondling.

Picked up these items at the same sale where I got the MAC MB9200 roller cabinet (post #177) last Friday. Mostly mechanics tools that will need a good cleaning. Unfortunately many have a wavy line engraved/ground around the piece but all seem serviceable. The seller/agent was just wanting stuff cleared out of the garage and that was reflected in the pricing, $20 for all.
Random sockets from S•K, MAC, Snap On, Husky-USA, Proto, OTC, Blackhawk. Wrenches from Craftsman, MAC, Blackhawk, Gearwrench, Toyota, Honda. Pliers from Utica, vice grip, channellock, Craftsman. 2 MAC socket trays. Craftsman 16" extension, SK locking extension. MAC disc brake caliper tool (bent)?.
Craftsman oil filter claw, KD Pittman puller, KD piston ringer, spark plug wire pliers. Dasco flat pry bar, Forest King handle, unknown claw hammer, Makita 9.6v charger (still have a working 9.6v drill driver). Nothing special but useful stuff none the less.

Sorry "Boss man" one more milk post:

On the rectangular waxed cardboard containers; still in use right along side of the plastic jugs around here, from pint or less (creams adn half and half) to 1/2 gallon - I save the quart and half gallons and freeze them for home made block ice, and even some of the smaller pint sizes for day trips or filling a pocket in my camp coolers.

Start cold, lay a base of block ice, Meat (frozen) on top, load the rest of the food items, then top off with party ice. I can go for a week to ten days on the same ice. Meat can stay frozen for 4-5 days. (I have to thaw it on top...)

On the sales front - Still rained out - supposed to stop for tomorrow then rain again through the 3 day W/E... I did buy a sewing machine part off Eprey last night - Hoping the part fits/works... I got skunked by a sniper on another item I bid on...

Nice job, WTN1271.
I wonder when did Craftsman start doing 6pt wrenches. Wonder if they did it during =V= period (I have one, but from later date)
I saw a 6 point DBE on e-bay once for ?$20 years ago - think it could have been =V=, but I do not remember.
... I think at some point I will try to get a full metric set of 6 points. I am only aware of Craftsman and Snap On 6 point combinations available. I missed Snap OSHM from CL reseller last year for a relatively good price.
(NB, for DBE there is also Nepros 6 point ones, but mucho dinaro at this point)

I got a nice small haul over the weekend. I was shocked to see the Craftsman Spinner when I opened a tool box under the work bench.
Also 8 shells left in the tattered box and a cool can of spray paint. I was in for $50 but knew the spinner was a descent one. The Tormek
I never heard of and took a chance as they are NOS and will see what grinder these parts are for.
That's a suckworthy haul for sure with all those Tormek goodies! I have been eyeing up one of the Tormek diamond truing tools for my grizzly slow speed grinder for awhile now.
I'd love to live near a place that threw out as much good stuff as your employer! I'd be checking their dumpster every day! You **** on multiple planes!
I usually peek into every scrap hopper I walk by anytime I make my way through the plant. Especially, if an area is undergoing any changes or they are making the workstation "more efficient". We always joke that things are thrown out and in a few months or years they will be buying one again.

@wtn1271: That Mac set looks good to me, which part do you think is bent?

Here's one on ebay right now, listed for $75, looks like yours. This one appears to have one extra round piece.

mikeinri : The plate has a slight "V" shape which I assumed was due to abuse or improper use. The MAC web site shows the plate as straight but a Google image search shows examples with the bend. Perhaps there was a design change over the years or it bends over time with use? As fate would have it, I bought a similar set from Amazon last fall to service brakes on a friend's car. The plates on that set are straight. Either way, I imagine the MAC set will work fine.

Looking at that identical one on ebay, I'd say the bend is as-designed / originally built. It's bent towards the contact points, presumably to give it more strength.

It's possible that they designed them flat afterwards to have more contact area, accommodate different sized calipers, save money, etc.

Shelbylex: The 6 point Craftsman combos in my pictures are - V inverted V - series, both SAE and metric. I have a few random Snap On 6 point combos and several S•K 6 point combination wrenches. My S•K wrenches are the raised panel type, 'C' series. I believe S•K still sells them in the smooth beam type too. Proto, Icon, Gearwrench and several amazon brands also seem to be available.

When I worked in a dairy in the late 80s (Oakhurst in Maine) they still had paper halfs, quarts, pints, and half-pints. Paper gallons were no longer made. They had plastic quarts and halfs too.

I'll add that as a Masshole that lives in NJ, and has driven back and forth hundreds of times, I can emphatically state that NJ is not part of New England. I know people (mostly ********* Sox fans with a Boston accent) who would deny that Connecticut remains part of New England since there are so many Yankees fans. But driving North on 95, the difference between the folks at the Vince Lombardi rest stop on the NJ Turnpike and the first rest stop on the former Connecticut Turnpike or the Merritt is plainly visible. People dress differently. They talk differently. Different ethnic mix. Very different places.

Garage Sale content. I haven't seen an ad for a garage sale with tools yet this year. Getting withdrawals.
