Test it with a magnet to find out if it is plate or solid.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

First vise I ever purchased, I'm sure it was in 1979. Had little cast nibs to locate various angles. In a short time one of the jaws cracked in the middle and the locating nibs wore down until the body would flop over constantly. I was going to weld it in upright position and was given a...

Found this on FBM. Rigid 4" in pretty good shape other than surface cosmetics. Only $30!

Excellent repair. I think the sleeve concept is outstanding. Heat retention and peening make good nickel rod repairs. May be better than new.

I don't blame you for passing on that one, with the body cracked out like that it probably has serious unseen issues. I do think the alignment fork repair was creative, possibly returning it to some usefulness.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I have never felt shortchanged using exposed screw vises. That is all I had at home until I was about 30 years old, then I bought an enclosed screw because I needed a larger vise. Since then I have acquired many more of both types. I use both types daily, and would not part with my Versa and...

The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

I bought this little KRA-65C box about 15+ years ago at a yard sale for $16, it has the keys and drawer removers in it. I tried a few things, but never came up with a satisfactory task for it. I hadn't seen or even thought about it for several years. I discovered my wife was keeping it with her...

Larger surface area and clearance for holding parts vertically on the left side of the vise. Wilton corner vises are popular with some woodworkers because of this.

I always liked the look of those offset ones. Seems they would be very handy.

Incomplete engine stand? Red lever would index a plate to provide positioning.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I wish I had pictures of them. I did not have a camera or phone when I worked in the repair shops The only brazed vises I currently have were not done by me. When younger, I worked with a neighbor who was a whizz at welding and brazing almost anything cast. He taught me to be fearless with...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Good repairs are nothing to worry about. I have used and abused several vises in large industry that failed from earlier abuse and were repaired, some by me. Broken dynamics, statics, swivel jaws and bases. Some have been taking a licking for decades and still ticking.

Not certain what you mean to look for- model numbers, most if not all have them. Now apparent bullet holes, that is not as common.

Heat, oil, tap and repeat. I would suggest focus the heat on the body and not the swivel jaw to expand the body and allow oil to penetrate.
