I've also thought about pop-riveting some bent-aluminium-sheet "slides" on the sides of the fans so filters can be easily slipped in and out.

Just the opposite! Air gets pulled through the filter, so the stuff being filtered out doesn't get sucked through the motor and blades first.

A friend had some magnets shift inside his, too. And once some of those strong magnets stack like checkers inside rhe sewn mat, they ain’t being repositioned back where they were. He was planning to warranty his. I’ll have to check if he’s done gotten a replacement.
