    Revisiting My Grandfather's Shop - A 20 Year Journey

My friend, I laughed out loud, thank you. So sorry for your loss. It sounds like your mom was a character. Happy memories I hope.

    Revisiting My Grandfather's Shop - A 20 Year Journey

Thank you everyone. The holiday has been a bit rough as you might imagine, but in the end, we have to be happy, we achieved what we set out to achieve. We kept my grandmother in her own home, safe, engaged and as healthy as possible. The only real short fall was there were no...

    Revisiting My Grandfather's Shop - A 20 Year Journey

Well Chapter Two of this story has come to a close. My grandmother has joined my mother and grandfather. I'm so glad I had this time with her.

Thank you for sharing. Now that's a story. I'm glad your dad shared it, and that you have remembered it. It is so true that we often have to reach a certain point in life, have gathered certain experiences, before we can hope to truly understand the stories our parents told.

    Revisiting My Grandfather's Shop - A 20 Year Journey

Those were a unique bunch of men. They were my grandfather's contemporaries and I had the pleasure of knowing a handful of them while growing up. In many ways they shaped my understanding of the world and a man's roll in it. I don't quite know how to explain it, but they were a predicable bunch...

    Revisiting My Grandfather's Shop - A 20 Year Journey

I'm sorry that crate got lost. Even the shipping labels it surely had would have contributed to your family's story. I'm glad you have such clear memories of your family's life before and after the move. I hope that you are able to record those memories for future generations. My mom was the...

    Revisiting My Grandfather's Shop - A 20 Year Journey

The key to my great-grandfather's house. I looked up the address a while back. The house is still there. I'm guessing they've changed the lock however. ;) That key was old even when he lived there.

    Revisiting My Grandfather's Shop - A 20 Year Journey

The shop has been pretty quiet the last couple weeks. My grandmother fell and broke her arm. Broken arms and walkers don't mix very well. I've been a little busy. Be safe out there folks, especially as we come into this holiday season. It was standing room only at the local ER. Over the last...

    Revisiting My Grandfather's Shop - A 20 Year Journey

Thanks for sharing. "His pride in his craft extended down to the smallest tools he used. It was as much his art as his craft, many times his expression of his character." Boy does that sound familiar.

Replacing 8ft fluorescent tubes with LED ballast bypass tubes in my shop.

I have started using ballast bypass lamps in the 4' fixtures around the shop and am quite happy, but for the 8' fixture, which is enclosed, I used adhesive backed LED strip lights and a transformer. One box provided two lengths. I oversized the transformer so I can add more lights in the future...

    Revisiting My Grandfather's Shop - A 20 Year Journey

Peeking from the bottom of the till, a scrap of vellum, a remnant piece of a 60 plus year old kitchen design. Looks like my grandfather's writing.

    Revisiting My Grandfather's Shop - A 20 Year Journey

Progress. Last week, the first tools returned to the drawers. I don't know if I got them in the right place, but they are out of the cabinet. Clues left behind in the drawers helped. Tiny metal wedges? >> Hammer drawer. Vintage Red Devil razor blade? >> Painting Supplies. A tiny Plomb ignition...

    Revisiting My Grandfather's Shop - A 20 Year Journey

We have an interloper. I had forgotten that my grandfather replaced the Craftsman drill press. I'm not sure why, unless perhaps he needed slower speeds when he started doing more metal work. I was pleased to find the original Craftsman tucked under the stairs, he probably kept it to give to...

    Revisiting My Grandfather's Shop - A 20 Year Journey

Yesterday I pulled out my grandfather's can of paste wax and some steel wool, and cleaned and waxed the bed of the jointer. It was well past time. This morning, it is smooth as glass, pitted glass perhaps, but it's ready to go back to work. I also greased the front bearings, still need to do the...

    Revisiting My Grandfather's Shop - A 20 Year Journey

^ That is a fun thing about old houses, the stories. Glad the son got to share a few. The place where I lived before moving home had begun life as a carriage house and been repeatedly adapted over the years. A good chunk of it's life had been spent as apartments, at least a portion of that time...
