My best suggestion would be the threads in the garage gallery, there are a lot of great ideas there. I'm actually in the same boat as you, though living large with a 18x12 that is original to the 1920 home we are restoring. Eventually I will get to the garage portion!

I have an old red GE Monitor Top from the 30's, pretty reliable fridge, does not use much power at all. The best feature is the the lever you can step on to open the door when your hands are full!

Honestly, if she likes the entryway she will hate the garage addition. It closes it off quite a bit and makes it cramped. Completely changes the look of the front of the house too.
