Started working on cars when I was young because I was broke. My Dad died when I was 19, after a long and expensive battle with bone cancer. My next door neighbor was a USAF aircraft mechanic and he helped me fix my terrible rusty cars. I now see he was doing WAY more for me than just teaching me how to use tools. Though I made plenty of money later in my career as an aerospace engineer, I never stopped working on cars. Maybe it grounded me as an engineer, or maybe I got satisfaction from the challenge of repairing my cars and saving the cost of a pro repairs. Or maybe I connected emotionally to a really tough time in my life when a neighbor's kindness helped me move forward.
Besides cars, I am an avid builder, woodworker (furniture and carpentry), & machinist. I'm currently converting a barn into a home for my family. I've hired VERY few contractors (just roofing, some masonry, and concrete), instead doing each part of the project myself.
When the barn is done, I will probably take on some sort of multi year long automotive project; maybe an antique pickup truck or a 911 or something. The barn's garage is 2 car, 30' wide x 22'+ deep with a 9' ceiling. It has 2 double carriage doors and a central steel column. Its really far from a dream shop. Not enough space for a lift, but maybe a mid rise would do it. I look forward to inspiration from GJ when that time comes.
