Buy an air tank and blow-off gun and then get a portable inflator instead.

REED R Series. Post your Reed date stamps.

Ok, I was able to find and positively confirm the date codes on my 405-1/2. To start, there is only one patent number in the casting: Nov 3, 1908. Most vises I have seen have three patent dates in the casting. Mine does not have the 1912 or 1914 patent date in the casting. The assembly...

Nice. I was able to clean mine up and get a positive ID on the date stamps as well.

REED R Series. Post your Reed date stamps.

The date stamps are very faint. I found assembly numbers in the usual places, but the date codes are barely readable. I am letting a tiny spritz of oven cleaner sit and try to remove 100+ years of gunk so I can finally date my 405-1/2. i don’t think that your vise is clean enough to be...

    The Mini Bungee Hack

this may seem like a trivial detail, but what knot do you use? It doesn’t look like a simple overhand or figure eight. How secure is the knot in shock cord? Do you have problems with the knots coming untied? I assume that the cord locks that you found are from a manufacturer other than...

    One of my favorite tools - and I can’t find a backup/replacement

One of my favorite tools is a carbide scraper. I bought it years ago at Lowe’s and cannot find a replacement. My son wants one but I have no idea who makes or sells it. The tool is basically a carbide insert mounted on the end of a robust screwdriver handle and shaft. i find this wonderfully...

    Running with scissors

yes! My daughter bought a pair of Shun-branded shears at the last factory sale (I work two blocks from the Shun/Kai/ZT/Kershaw HQ) and I had her buy me another pair at the sale this year. They are a joy to use.

Version 2 tool bag... Looking for more ideas to add or remove.. Help

As far as the locksmith tools, you can buy a pair of precut “set up keys”for about a buck. This would keep you from having to file-cut a new key. https://www.clksupplies.com/collections/rekeying-tools/products/sc4-schlage-6-pin-set-up-keys-pair You still have to carry followers and the...

    bicycle cable(wire) cutter: Knipex, Felco

I would not do this. If you get Loctite on the thumb wheel, you can’t turn the lock. I can’t see how you would get Loctite on an interference/transition fit without pushing excess out of the hole and into the interface between the thumb wheel and the hole.

    bicycle cable(wire) cutter: Knipex, Felco

Here is what I would do… It sounds like the problem is that the pin that holds the thumb wheel does not have a good interference fit. I took a couple of photos of mine: and here is the backside: I would use a center punch to slightly mushroom the pin from the backside. You will need to...

Are Fluke Multimeters Worth The Substantial Extra Money?

I recently purchased a Uni-T clamp meter and highly recommend for leave in the car/tool kit. I have a Fluke 89IV that stays on the bench but us the UNI-T way more for random tasks. It is a clamp meter (AC/DC) as well as AC/DC voltage, diode check, non-contact voltage, and continuity check with...

    Hex key deep dive

You want the one that are not designated “with holding function”. The holding function adds about 40% to the price, so this should work great. KC Tool has them about 30% off right now. https://www.kctool.com/wera-073593-multicolor-hex-ball-end-hex-metric-l-key-clip-set/ These are the ones...

m18 fuel 3/8"" compact impact wrench 2854-20 setting 4 rpm speed?

editing after misreading the title. Mode 1 RPMs: 0-800; Mode 2 RPMs: 0-1,650; Mode 3 RPMs: 0-2,400; Mode 4 RPMs: 0-2,400 There are three speed ranges, as well as a bolt removal mode that applies full torque in reverse (maximum IPM) and then slows as soon as the bolt is loose. That is “mode...
