'You must be this tall to ride the garage' -- ideas for access control for kids?

My folks had a similar problem when I was a teen-ager, only they were trying to keep toddlers (children numbers 4 and 5) out of a bedroom shared by teens (children numbers 1 and 2). They used a gate latch like the one shown. If you snake a string or wire through the door frame, you can operate...

    Garage storage/organization: I wish I would have...

Things I will do different next time: Make the workbench shallower. My current bench is 40 inches deep, my next bench will be about 28 inches deep. I will build closed storage. I will add more electrical capacity and not depend on extension cords. I will not skimp on material quality and I...

    Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT The 12-Gauge Garage

Thanks for the info, Jack. No apology necessary, you see how long it took me to get back to this thread after you posted! I have a space that will become a small outdoor kitchen and I think I'm going to use your arched tubing/fabric cover idea. I'm trying to decide how waterproof the top needs...

Have safety glasses/equipment ever saved you??

I was using a Makita 4" angle grinder with a wire wheel to knock off the fire scale from a freshly forged steel project. I was tired and behind schedule, so I hadn't put on my leather apron and I wasn't entirely focused on my work - I did have my safety glasses on and a face shield. The wire...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

In addition to being a strong, durable third hand, a vise can have a small anvil built into it that is very handy. I have also used a vise as a press.

    Pickup truck crane / hoists

Years ago, my company truck had a lightweight crane that folded into the bumper manufactured by Western Mule. They model we had could lift 1,000 lbs. with its electric winch, but not much more. It was very handy for stuff like generators, compressors, and the occasional drum of soil. When not...

Jack: I, too, am inspired by your garage and the many other projects you have shown us in this thread. I really appreciate the time you’ve spent putting your posts together and the patience you’ve had with all of our questions. I would like to know a little more about your shade canopy, if...

    My Amazing Inheritance

New tools are cool, but there's nothing like tools passed on to you by your dad, grandad, etc. Every time you use tools like that, you can think about the people that went before you, how much they knew about using those tools, and how they influenced your life - even if it was indirectly.

Rubber bricks, basically. Something I could re-purpose?

I also adapted a block of wood to my floor jack, though I didn't groove the top. I used a piece of oak from a heavy-duty pallet. A layer of some kind of rubber or leather could be fastened to the wood if some "give" is needed.
