^ yes, I did confirm it was wired for max output. I went to Lowes today and picked up a 5kw/ 17k btu heater for $198. Its made in the USA by a company called KING, lol. Its a good bit smaller and lighter than the Fahrenheat unit, but I just wanted something to test and see the output...

contacted Blain's farm & fleet where I purchased the unit and they were very quick to offer a pre-paid return shipping lable. I'll be sending it back this weekend and hopefully getting another one. thanks to everyone for the input.

just switched the two white and black wires but felt no change in heat output. I checked the voltage at the breaker and at the heater terminals while the unit was on/off. no change... reads 238-239v.

I don't have a red wire, unless you mean the red from the 6/3 I have coming into the sub panel. I'm running 10/2 from my sub panel/breaker to the heater. The black wire of the 10/2 goes to one leg of the heater and the white wire goes to the other. the cooper wire is to ground... maybe I'm...
