    The VISES of Garage Journal

Well, haven’t posted here much lately but figured I’d give an update of my finds in the last few weeks, just to add them to the archive and share for anyone that’s not apart of the Facebook groups! Smallest to biggest: 2” Prentiss jewelers double swivel 2.5” Columbian 102.5 7” Prentiss 57 7”...

Yeah I saw that 81P that was posted. I actually have 2 8” Simplex 81P’s, a Desmond Stephens and a Ridge Tool company. I’m looking at buying a 3/4” thick 60” diameter round steel table, that way I’ll have something big and sturdy for tear downs and I can take a picture captioned “The Vises of...

I have an Athol 618, the stationary version of the 628 and I love it. However I’ve been searching high and low for a Starrett 326 to put on my bench. I have a 324.5 and it’s an awesome vise. Starrett ran Athol with the same kind of precision machining / tight tolerances as they do their other tools.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Hey guys, haven’t posted many of my finds here recently as I have just been posting them to the FB groups. But I figured I would post this weeks deliveries: 6” Holland’s Offset 8” Reed 108 2.5” Reed 102 1/2 I’m down to only needing an 8” Holland’s and an 8” Yost to have acquired at least one...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I’m going to do it myself, thought about having a good friend do it but if something goes wrong I only want to have to blame myself. I’m in the process of moving so all of my welders and machine shop equipment are currently in limbo, would have been faster to have him do it but I’m not really in...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

When I pick it up and get around to it, of course I will post when it’s finished. Edit: I’ve never read the tutorial of yours that you just posted but for the most part that’s a pretty standard way of fixing a crack like this and the way that I plan to fix mine. The only small...

Nothing personal about it, read my edit, everyone collects differently and for different reasons. Good luck on the hunt, just stay out of my territory! :bounce::lol_hitti

    The VISES of Garage Journal

That didn’t answer my question :lol_hitti Always curious to see the different ways we all collect these vises, personally I generally stay away from anything cracked or major breaks unless it’s really cheap but I also branched out and bought my own mill and lathe so that I didn’t have to pass...

Must not be into welding / fabrication then? Or just specifically looking for pristine examples? They are both easy fixes that don’t have any impact on the function of the vise. I’ve been talking to the seller via text / phone conversations since a few minutes after he posted it, I tried to...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Yeah I was quite surprised at how good it looked, especially serving hard time in a railroad yard. I saw your earlier post, speaking of Yost 208 and Holland’s 28, when are you going to sell those to me? I’m down to only Holland’s and Yost, once I find them I’ll have collected an 8” vise from...

https://www.muggyweld.com/product/77-electrode/ There ya go, pretty much covers anything I would have to say. They also sell a nickel based #72 rod. My biggest thing is that all of the cast iron that I’ve seen welded with the #77 rods blend almost perfectly, no huge color difference like nickel...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Bought this 210 pound 7” Prentiss 23 for $200, yes it has a small crack on the slide but it’s really no big deal. I’ll grind out the old repair and reweld it using Muggyweld 77 rods and it’ll be unlikely that anyone would ever know it was cracked. The history behind the vise was my biggest...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Sorry for the slow part #2, got caught up at work! This story starts out late last night as I was getting ready to leave work. A friend of mine sends me a Craigslist link for a Prentiss 58 in excellent condition that’s an hour away from him and 4.5 hours away from me. Naturally I contact the...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Today has been one heck of a day, this will be put in two separate posts just for clarity! My 8” Columbian 508 showed up at Fastenal the other day so I went and picked it up today, man what a beautiful vise! This thing is absolutely pristine, it doesn’t look like it’s ever been used! A lot of...
