A Savage Inventory of the Tools That Actually Matter

From Ryan's original post: 3. Vintage Craftsman Drill Press. Tools from the 1940s make me genuinely happy in a way that is difficult to explain to a normal person. The build quality, the look, the sheer density of the things. But the 103.231.40 earns its place on this list for a simpler reason...

Fuel tank cleaning (car) tips or tricks?

This doesn't have anything to do with anything. Just me not being able to keep my mouth shut. I have a friend who showhorned one of those 500 inch Caddy engines into a 1932 Ford roadster and got the hood (tops and sides) all on. His profession is restoring high-end cars so it looks like a...

Building the Cub Cadet Garage. Finally it's Done

If you haven't yet dealt with the door hold open issue go see the folks who sell the pre-made garden sheds. They use factory made gizmos that work extremely well.

How do you store your electric extension cords?

I coil them; plug the two ends together; and use these clips. I've never had any negative experiences doing this. There are several places and methods/hooks in my shop to hang them.

Got a stainless sink for a song, now to figure out how to mount it...

For everyone who responded here regarding glue/silicone: thank you. I've always wondered how undermount sinks were held in place and now I've been enlightened. I've never had and probably will never have an undermount sink, but now my education is furthered. fwiw; I had a double bowl SS sink in...

    Steel to wood beam equivalency?

I'm no structural engineer so feel free to tell me I'm an idiot. Could you eliminate every other post by using flat steel slabs, the same width as your existing wood beams are tall, through bolted on each side of your existing wood beams. Therefore resulting in: the existing wood beams still...

I have a wrench organization problem

I'm sorta jealous of these 3-D printed organizers. I don't do the 3-D printing thing but have friends who do. Are there files available to use in printing these or does each individual have to create his/her own file? If I had the correct file(s) my kids/grandkids or friends could print some of...

    Outswing vs inswing

I have a south facing outswing man-door on my shop. I've been here 25 years and it's been just fine for me. My shop is so crowded inswing would definitely be in the way. We get snow here in central Missouri and occasionally I've had to dig in front of the door to get in but that's never been a...

We moved from AZ to Ozark MO

So you get to eat dinner at Lambert's every day... b-t-w; welcome to Missouri.

    DIY/Wood Car Stands(Cribbing)...Let's see them!

I am guessing stability. Two of mine are 2x8 and two are 2x10; thus 7 1/2" and 9 1/2" wide. They work just fine and when I made them I never considered that they might or might not be stable enough. Of course mine aren't nearly as tall as some shown here.

Ever do something so stupid you wonder if you should be left unsupervised?

I was rolling a wheel/tire out of my shop yesterday; looking down at the wheel instead of where I was going. BANG!!! I felt like a linebacker hit me in the head with a 3-pound hammer. I have a couple of wooden racks that house my collection of spare distributors and I had run smack dab into it...

    Old Chicken Wire Window

I retired eleven years ago but up until that time we were still using this glass in doors into machine rooms and the like. Usually in 10" x 10" OR 4" x 25" door glass. There was some requirement that door windows be no more than 100 square inches into hazardous spaces. I think that stairwell...

    WTB; Stowell/Hanson combination vise attachments

The combination vise I recently acquired is missing some pieces (saw clamp and drill "backstop"). Also you'll notice that the pipe vise piece is broken. If you are willing to part with any of these please PM me here or email to [email protected]. Prefer old and beat up pieces to match the...
