Yes it is very impressive. I found it searching about the 504 columbian. Like a dummy I didn't bookmark it. Then tonight I spent a little bit trying to remember/recall where it was. Very nice of him cause a lot of people are not willing to share their time and wisdom for free.
Is the back of the base busted or is it angled. Did this come with a swivel. If everything else is good I'll bring him down if busted and no swivel. Did they stamp numbers on top of slide?
Why no 594 here http://scuttle.dayid.org/wiki/index.php/Rock_Island_Vise
Freets have you tried the heat method before. Probably more time consuming than hydraulic press. Like we talked about Sunday I just worry about over straighten leading to more humps and valleys.
What's this guy worth if nothing is broke and jaws close good. Said 100 would do it. Too high, lower or about right. Is it a GJ member or just some guy?
Carla I have been thinking about cutting a new one. Did you ever try to just clean up the spindle? Would it be easier to clean up 10 or so threads rather then another spindle?
Also I saw a acme 7/8 die head on ebay. Wouldn't that clean them up or cut new spindle with the head.
joe.striper I think I already caught the vice.
Fretters I think that this one might have been pushed ppast the limit. Cause I haven't found the other half and it was sitting next to that swordfish that didn't have the dynamic
KMScott I suppose if I can find the other half then I would fix...
I finally put it in the lathe to see what's going on. Seems that the high spot really twist along the length of spindle. The tape is where the new nut stops. Handle is on right.
Was going to apply some heat to it but then those damn customers starting coming in!
Not exactly sure what to do...
Haven't found the other half to yet. No names or markings that I can see. Took some more pics with a tape maybe it will help. The handle has been cut and some threads have been put on.
Found these parts laying around in the back 40 at the shop today. Going to look for the rest of the wilton. I think thats what it is. The other not sure about.
Dad isn't sure if they broke or just parts but going to look for the rest for sure.
Outlawmws here's some more pics. Still shows a difference.
drivesitfar I'm thinking that may be the way to go. WWW.VISEPARTS.COM has one for 100$ but not sure if it'd work or show another problem!
CwazyWabbit funny you say that cause I talked to an old timer from Boeing today and he talked about BEFORE I used the press to straighten the spindle, I should have tried to apply heat to area. He thought it might shrink the threads where the heat was applied as well are remove the bow. Only be...
The damn thing didn't bind up when the nut was 3/4 broke! Now with the factory nut brazed and the end play taken out it binds more than before! It's not a horrible couple turns but tighter than with the busted nut.
The nut definitely doesn't look like the RI. Thinking the busted nut had...
