Grew up in central Pennsylvania. Built model airplanes as a kid. Liked to take things apart and sometimes figured out how to put them back together. Started raiding my father's collection and buying my own tools by age 8. Still have some of this stuff.

Crafted in metal, wood and worked on cars in high school shop class (early 1970s) with Craftsman SAE stuff. Kept a '64 VW Beetle alive with help from friends (late '70s) and fleshed out Craftsman set with metric items.

Studied guitar luthiery in Vermont (1982.) Moved to Tucson, Arizona (1983) and established a decade-long career working on stringed musical instruments . . . everything from electric guitars to violins. Bought a lot of interesting specialized luthiery tools along the way and modified others for specialized instrument repair tasks.

Career change in the early '90: radio announcer (I'm still doing that at the local NPR station.) Did a lot of "sweat equity" to my 1920s vintage house with help from a friend. Fleshed out general carpentry tools as a result. Kept a 1951 Chevrolet Coupe running as a daily driver from 1986 to 1995. More auto tool purchases along the way.

Audio engineering hobby (outgrowth of musical instrument repair and radio work) found me running concert sound systems outdoors (for Jazz and Blues artists mostly) and audio recording indoors. More interesting electronic and small mechanical tools purchased for basic maintenance and repair of that equipment. I still record audio on location (mostly Classical music . . . my wife and son both professional performers in that idiom.)

Return to boyhood model airplane hobby (late 90s.) Bought a lot of specialty wood and metalworking micro tools I wished I had as a kid. Also taught building/flying model airplanes to grade schoolers in after-school classes from 2003 to 2010.

Started riding a bicycle daily in 2012. Quickly brought myself up to speed on how to work on bicycles and, as a result, I'm currently buying some interesting specialty tools for that. Wanting to also upgrade on basic wrenches, sockets, etc. with better items. Found The Garage Journal while doing the internet research for this and it has proven a very useful resource, so it's time to join.
