Deck building - bark side up or down?

Yeah I noticed that pretty quickly. I’ve been using a level on each board as I go and I can usually tell which way the board is wanting to cup. Thanks again for all the input guys, decks coming along nicely.

Deck building - bark side up or down?

Thanks guys, you are all confirming what common sense was telling me. I decided to go with the CAMO system on this build. Two screws per joist, joists on 12" centers. Should be a nice day, hope to make some progress.

Deck building - bark side up or down?

Guys I'm getting ready to lay my deck surface tomorrow and am looking for input on which direction to lay the boards. Bark side up or bark side down? Or should I look at each board and lay according the the direction the board is wanting to go? Seems there are a lot of opinions on which way...

Deck building - railings and fastener questions

Jackfre - Awesome! Thank you for your experience. dcg9381 - Good point on the SS screws. I had thought about looking for an SS alternative that was the same design as the Camo (if there is one out there). I had forgot about the joist wrap, thank you! SB - Thank you for your recommendation...

Deck building - railings and fastener questions

I'm in the process of building a new deck and am looking for opinions on railings and fasteners. We are going with a traditional PT wood surface with aluminum railing. Local lumber store's preferred brand is DekPro. Anyone have any experience with this brand? Any other aluminum railing...

    Electrical troubleshooting question

Thanks! I helped an electrician friend remodel his house a few years ago so I called in a favor and he will help me replace the panel. I've been trying to get as much of the prep work done to make the transition as easy as possible. Definitely haven't ruled out that possibility although it...

    Electrical troubleshooting question

The circuit is one of the original house light/outlet circuits and so far that's I'll I've found on this circuit. That's a good idea! Nope, not a GFCI. Oddly enough, this problem only happens at night (that I have observed) and I happen to be putting the kiddo to bed. The baby monitor...

    Electrical troubleshooting question

The problem will be fixed soon but I am curious as to the root cause. I have been experiencing a situation where I lose power to a circuit but the breaker doesn't trip. I have isolated the circuit. Manually tripping the breaker will restore power. Manually tripping the main breaker will also...

    Wood Flooring Coating

Hmm. I don't know the answer to that either. We have some really good floor coating guys on here though. I'm sure they will be along shortly and will provide some insight on what type of coating might be best. Welcome to GJ!

    Wood Flooring Coating

I've had good luck with numerous coats of poly on misc. outdoor projects to protect them from the elements. Not sure it would stand up to the wear it will see on the floor though. Is this in the states? Any particular reason you didn't pour concrete?

    Hardwood flooring install

Yes, that's how I would do it. In both house's I've done I used the centerline down the hallway as my straight line. However, the hall in my homes was more of a central focal point than in your house and it would have been very noticeable if the floor wasn't parallel to the hall. Based on...

What else to do before I pour? (infloor lights?)

It depends on the design of the building, but I always though it would be very handy to have an attachment point on the far wall in front of each garage door to winch in a vehicle. Perfect for car restorations. Let gravity pull it out for blasting/painting and then winch it back in when...

    Stump removal advice/ideas? Thanks!

This but with a chainsaw. You should be able to plunge cut down into the stump and come out the other side below ground. Work your way around the stump and take it out in chunks. You may end up ruining the chain due to the dirt, but any professional method will cost more then $20. Once you...

Working in the shop with a toddler?

I have to admit I am enjoying this thread. :D I have a 22 month old and these guys are spot on. Might as well give up the notion of doing any real work with a toddler around. Even if you can capture their attention for a while I guarantee they will get bored the moment you start to...

    Adhering rubber to steel

kd3pc - Man I would LOVE to pick up a featherlite. Unfortunately those are a little outside our budget and the used market in my area is none virtually existent. Rubber mats on the bottom 1/2 of the walls are a factory option on the trailer we are looking at and after a discussion with the...
