Another update: the drywall is finished and painted. This was the first time I hired someone to work on my house; last year my wife and I completely gutted and renovated the main floor and basement of the house doing everything ourselves. I worried that anyone I hired wouldn’t have the same...
Thanks everyone for all the feedback. I'm fairly new here so I wasn't expecting so much response!
I've been doing more research and hiring movers is starting to seem like the best option. I've exhausted my favors from friends lately with house renovations and moving furniture, so I was hoping...
I have a small 10x20" lathe and a mill/drill machine located in my parents basement. I need to move them out to set up in my new shop. Looking for ideas on how to get them up a flight of stairs.
We got the machines in by strapping them to a moving dolly and then a rather large friend and my dad...
I apologize if I'm missing something but I'm not sure why this is so complicated. Normal hard-wire smoke detectors are wired with 14/3, so 12/3 will work just fine. Why do you want to keep the hot (black) isolated between the shop and house alarms? It would be simpler to just connect the hot...
Just wanted to drop in and say that I love the paint scheme you did on the drywall walls. I like how the stripe gives something for the eyes to focus on but isn't distracting or too showy. I've been looking for a while for a paint scheme for my shop and think I've found it now! If you don't mind...
Drywall guys were here today and got the ceiling boards up. Obviously there's still a lot left to do but I'm starting to picture this as a future workshop and not just a place where I throw junk.
Speaking of junk, my lovely wife has let me move everything that was in the garage into our family...
Originally the garage door was suspended from the ceiling. I'm planning to build shelving around the perimeter of the walls, so the door supports would be in the way. I was able to redo the garage door hangers and attach them to the walls. This way they are just as solid and are much less...
Hello everyone!
I’ve been inspired and learned a lot from this community and finally have enough progress to start a build thread. I will be converting a small attached 2-car garage into a useful and comfortable workshop / studio.
The Vision:
This garage will not just be my workshop, but a...
Great information. One important thing to consider is efficiency. Most gas shop heaters I've seen are rated around 80%, but I've read that often they operate at lower rates in the real world; even as much as 50% or more of the energy being lost up the chimney. Electrical heat is nearly 100%...
Yeah I don't care about the fan cycling, I just don't want to damage it. Probably not worth worrying about. I would just use the built-in thermostat like you said but my ceiling is 12' so I'd need a ladder every time I want to adjust it. I think I'll just stick with the line-voltage thermostat.
Has anyone figured out a way to install a remote thermostat with these heaters? I bought a similar version of this heater at Princess Auto and in the same aisle they had 2-pole thermostats rated for 5000W. I was planning to just install one in series with the heater like a switch, but that means...
