    To insulate or not

I'll add to the list of "yes, insulate". Also, I'll add to the list of "batts are better". The best part is you can put them up at your leisure and as they go up, the place keeps getting more and more insulated. You can buy wider rolls than the ones solds at HD & L, so if your framing works for...

Above 1200 Sq/FT Hay barn conversion to auto shop - 30x40 pole barn project

Around December of 2022, I finally pulled the trigger on the lift and it showed up a week or so later. I got the Triumph C7000 lift because of the fact that I could move it anytime the post(s) were in the way. One post is pretty close to the exterior wall anyway, so it probably won't be in the...

Above 1200 Sq/FT Hay barn conversion to auto shop - 30x40 pole barn project

Hi guys! It's been a while and we've been using the shop extensively. It was large enough to fit a 15x20 foot inflatable paintbooth in it which I used to paint my wife's Mustang. The car turned out pretty good overall! Next up, some new additions to the shop!

    Welder

Great info in this thread which I need to spend some more time reading in detail. One thing I didn't see a lot was talk about plasma cutters. I've been out of the welding game for about 20 years, but started looking again and see a lot of TIG/Plasma Cutter combo boxes. Any opinions on those...

Putting up a ceiling in my new pole barn

That's unfortunate that you can't find 26 gauge PBR panels near you. That's what I used on my 10' span with 9.5" of batt insulation on top and no problems. If you are stuck with 29 gauge, I think 4' is okay. When using metal panels for the ceiling, the fact that you don't have to worry about...

Putting up a ceiling in my new pole barn

I'll echo these last couple posts. Metal will cost more, but no taping, muding, sanding priming, or painting. Also, if you plan to have the place for a long time, I think metal will last longer. Sometimes a roof leaks, or water gets in somehow or other. Granted your vapor barrier sound take care...

Putting up a ceiling in my new pole barn

Well, I've seen it done, and I've done it myself over a 10' span. 26 gauge PBR panels with 9.5" of batt insulation on top. In a house, probably not something that is done, but I can't say I've seen any metal ceilings in a house either. Drywall is heavy and also can't cover a span as well as...

Putting up a ceiling in my new pole barn

If you go with a metal ceiling you can cover an 8' span without adding strapping/stringers.

Ceiling Strapping for Pole Barn Ceiling

I have 10' between my trusses and I did not use any strapping and 9.5" thick batt insulation on top - no problems. You do need to get PBR metal panels though. They are rated for a 6' unsupported span as roofing material, but when used as a ceiling they don't have to deal with wind and snow, so...

Above 1200 Sq/FT Hay barn conversion to auto shop - 30x40 pole barn project

After some suggestions in another thread about cabinets, I decided to get a pair of the Seville Ultra HD cabinets. Since I have the extra height, I also order a pair of stackers to put on top of them. Eventually I may get another on and replace my old metal cabinet, but for now that would be...

Above 1200 Sq/FT Hay barn conversion to auto shop - 30x40 pole barn project

A few days ago I finished up the final caulking and paint touch ups. The last couple nights I've been turn wrenches on metal again, dismantling an engine donor car to be specific. Nice to not be on a ladder for a change! Here's another before and after comparison.

Above 1200 Sq/FT Hay barn conversion to auto shop - 30x40 pole barn project

8/24/18 - 9/9/18 - Not a lot of progress to report. Some of our kids were visiting us over the Labor Day week which meant several nights of no work at all. But hanging out in downtown Nashville and going to our local county fair with the grand baby are well worth the delay. By the time I had...

Storage cabinets wanted, what to buy?

Thanks! I didn't even see the stackers, that will be perfect for what I'm after.
