Any suggestions for a portable garage which could survive in Alberta winters and cost less than $500?

I helped my neighbour erect a Cover-Tech shelter about 10 years ago and it has easily withstood winters in the snow belt for 10 years and counting. So it checks the durability box. It does not check the $500 box though. But if you ever find a few extra bucks under the mattress, well then........

Show Us Your Shop Built Cabinets

I installed the wheels so that I could move the cabinets around if I ever needed to clean around them or to relocate them if that should ever be desired. I bought the wheels on sale at Princess Auto, so they added just a small cost in the scheme of things.

Show Us Your Shop Built Cabinets

I built 6 lower cabinets last winter in order to get some much needed organization into the shop. They were built with 5/8 Baltic Birch ply, except the drawer bottoms, which were 1/2 inch ply. The drawer joints were locked mitre joints. The cabinets were just a bit under 24 inches deep, and 24...

    Spoilboard Flattening Wood Router Bits

I flattened a 30 inch diameter oak slab and just used a bit that I had in my set which was a 3/4 inch rabbiting bit. I was worried the small bit would take me a month of Sundays, but it really only took maybe 20 minutes or so. Then the fine ridges were easily cleaned up with an orbital sander...

Is it recommended to change hydraulic oil in floor jacks?

When I rebuilt my Michelin floor jack after 15 years of use, the oil was gross - definetly black and may have had bits of sludge in it. . So I decided I would preemptively change it every "few" years. It's been 10 years now, still haven't done it, but I will.....one of these years.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Finally finished building these 6 shop cabinets, a bit under 24 inches wide and deep and about 37 inches high with the wheels.. Drawer construction was a locked miter joint, 1/2 inch baltic birch bottoms, the sides and cabinet boxes were 5/8 inch B.B. Used a natural birch edge banding on the...

    The Shop Notebook

Yes, I keep a notebook for projects which require some sort of design. Nothing fancy - I do prefer lined paper to keep drawings and dimensions a bit organized. Occasionally, I have had to refer back to my projects. Two days ago, the self installed chute deflector on the Kubota's snow blower...

    Makita 4" grinder Model 9501B / rebuild

Your story is similar to mine. I bought my 4 inch Makita sometime around 1984, then used it very hard for many years. Around 2020, it needed the same TLC as yours, brushes, cord and the switch no longer latched "on". I decided to keep old faithful, so for the switch I retrofitted a toggle...

Compressor pressure relief valve for Harbor Freight compressor

There should be two ratings for a safety valve, pressure (psi) and capacity (cfm). Just be sure that whatever PRV you get is rated to pop at or below the rating for the tank, although that seems like a bit of a guess in this case, but also, importantly, discharging a bit above the capacity of...

    Fuller tools

I have a set of Fuller wood chisels that I have beat on and abused terribly. I believe I have some pliers too. In the 70's and early 80's, Fuller tools were ubiquitous, and I am surprised I don't have a lot more of their offerings, but, even back then, I was really trying to start my tool...

    Best buys for JET tools

I have a Jet 13R drill press from the late 1970's. It was made in Japan. A bench top model that weighs 160 lbs, Very heavy, and appears well made.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Finished up a cabinet which will go above the bathroom vanity at the cottage. Started as a bit of a screw up, - had it dry fitted ready for glue and was planning the door when I realized the wall height was much less than standard, and, there was a light already in place above the vanity that I...

Do you ever think about cheating on ……

I am probably an intermediate wood worker. I had finished assembling a project and had slight gaps at a couple joints. The project was going to be painted. I asked a friend, who is a professional cabinet maker and work worker, what he thought of my plan to fill the gaps with wood filler...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Finally finished the inside doors that I built for the cottage - poplar stiles and rails, birch ply panels, and poplar trim pieces, made with an ogee then a cove bit on the router to add a bit of bling. The doors will be painted after they have been hung and trimmed (if necessary) to fit the...
