However all it is inside is two diodes forming a half wave bridge rectifier. I will probably obviate the need for the octal socket and just use diodes. I will probably also add a filtering...
Indeed, that is the purpose of the rectifier (rectifies AC to DC). So we are on the same page!

I know this is an old post but I recently acquired a Portomag Magnetic Drill.
I think mine may be a bit newer than yours, not sure though.
I was trying to figure out what in the world was connected to the vacuum tube socket...maybe someone potted a solid state rectifier and jury...
