    Indeed, that is the purpose of the rectifier (rectifies AC to DC). So we are on the same page! Thanks for the documents (would you believe me if I said I already found them - I am a huge patent hound, lol).

    I believe it has to be a rectifier otherwise the magnet would not be getting DC.

    Hey There, I know this is an old post but I recently acquired a Portomag Magnetic Drill. I think mine may be a bit newer than yours, not sure though. I was trying to figure out what in the world was connected to the vacuum tube socket...maybe someone potted a solid state rectifier and jury...
