    bowing garage wall

I found a way to turn the half turnbuckle nut, I got an c$8 pipe wrench from Habitat for Humanity, then added a c$4 pipe from the local hardware store to give me some more leverage: I got a lot more turns on the nut.... I'll leave it to settle for a couple of days and give it another go...

    bowing garage wall

I already installed collar ties on each of the rafters, the roof is stable, I was up on it today with no issues. The carpenter ants are a new thing, but I already dealt with termites as well. This was what was left of one of the corners:

    bowing garage wall

I got the nut to loosen in the end, and on removing it, found the nut was adjusted as far as it would go, in that there was no thread left to turn it against, so I put a lump of pressure treated lumber over the end, then threw the big washer back on and tightened the nut back up, so now there is...

    bowing garage wall

the nut(such as it is) is holding against a large steel washer, the wood isn't great, I saw carpenter ants further along the structure, who are a previously unknown issue, currently when I try and turn the nut the threaded rod seems to turn as well, the nut and thread are rusted together. I...

    bowing garage wall

Hi all, I have an issue with my one of my garage walls, its starting to bow outwards approximately in the middle of the wall (its 22 feet from front to back), there is a metal tube (no idea what its called, its like a reverse screw jack) that spans the garage tying the two side walls together...

    tripping the lights(not so fantastic)

yep, RHD, it came over to Canada with me from the UK, its totally standard, so 948 cc, twin 1/8th su's and no synchro on first (who needs it anyway) I guess one or other (or both) the lights and GDO were causing an issue for the GFCI breaker, they are now both plugged into GFCI receptacles...

    tripping the lights(not so fantastic)

The GFI only tripped when both lights and GDO were plugged in, on its own the GDO was fine, I only have GFCI receptacles in the garage now, and despite what others have posted about GFI and GDO's/ florescent lights not playing nicely , no trips so far.

    tripping the lights(not so fantastic)

I replaced the GFCI breaker with an ordinary 15a breaker, connected the lights and garage door opener, and sucess, there is no more tripping, even when the opener and lights are used at the same time (I now have GFCI receptacles in the garage, one bathroom and the workshop, so and fairly well...

    tripping the lights(not so fantastic)

Hi again, I checked the wiring, the earth screw I used was a little small, so I replaced it, and had some success: http://s90.photobucket.com/albums/k269/frogeye/?action=view&current=IMG_0405.mp4 it went ok like this, then as I was packing up to come back into the house, it tripped...

    tripping the lights(not so fantastic)

Hi, the shop light is a sealed unit, I don't know what grounding adaptor it might have.

    tripping the lights(not so fantastic)

I had the lights on (which was great, I could see!), then when I plugged the door opener back in via the newly wired ceiling outlet, it tripped.

    tripping the lights(not so fantastic)

Thanks for the replies so far, I will re check the wiring in the light fitting, to see if its correct, is it possible that the lights and the door opener are too much for a 15a breaker though?
