    The VISES of Garage Journal

A rare CL find. A Craftsman 5195 joined the family today. It is in good shape and has entered the refurb queue.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

The illness continues I have not posted here for awhile but that doesn't mean I have quit dragging vises home. A Rock Island 542-BX followed me home today. Now there is so much cast iron around my place I can barely get cell reception. I suspect a gravity well. I will need to make some...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I had a little time off over the holidays and used some to indulge my vises. Here is an Athol 614 1/2 I cleaned up shown with my 615. The 615 is still the vise I use to hold other vises when I work on them. The most difficult part of the job is getting the spring assembly (used instead of a...

This may have been posted but I could not find it. "It has been my experience that folks who have no vises have very few virtues." Abraham Lincoln

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I left my large Hollands vise alone together with a handsome Reed vise in the shed over the winter. Imagine my surprise when I stepped into the yard and found mother and new offspring sunning themselves on a recent warm afternoon. I was able to snap this shot before they spooked and stampeded...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Here is a recent auction win. It is a Hollands 53 1/2. I think it weighs close to 80 lbs. It took some time in the electrolysis bath and a little persuasion to get everything apart. Everything is there except for 2 pipe jaws.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Here is a recent find. A "Made in Japan" Craftsman with 6 in. jaws. (I am not sure I would have figured that out without the big metal "6" sign pinned to the jaw.) Hard to find any info about this. I cleaned surface rust from the slide but have not decided to do more. Almost as beefy as...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Re: Need Some Prentiss Help Here are a couple of pics showing removal of the taper pin from my Morgan 340B. It was even better than I hoped because once the frog and the swivel base are removed, a punch/drift fits through the swivel attachment hole and aligns with the taper hole easing removal...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

This is exactly what I needed! For the benefit of SWMBO, I am going to print an 8x10 and post it in the shed near my very reasonable, nay, even moderate number of vises. I am trying to think of an excuse to swing through Kansas. Thanks, Kevin

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I have a similar stuck pin on my Morgan. While cleaning it up today I found a hole above the frog inside that seems to align with the pin. I am going to try a punch like object in the hole and a wedge to try to force the pin out from the inside. The extra pins on your Prentice do not look...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Greetings, A Morgan 340B just followed me home. The adoption fee was less than $1 pound. This vise has a pivoting jaw (see pic). I am preparing to refurb the vise and have a question about the pin that holds the jaw in its "non-pivoted" location. Does the pin unscrew or is it intended to...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Greetings all, I ran across this site a year or so ago. It prompted me to go dig a couple of vises out of cardboard boxes in the garage. Now I have 8 vises including the most recently acquired Morgan Chicago 35 pictured here. I neglected to take a "before" picture when it had shabby paint, a...
