Low Torque Spec Wheel Nut's... I Just Can't Do It.

My niece had her summer tires put on her ford minivan by Canadian Tire. It has factory aluminum rims on it. 2 days later her husband is driving down the highway by himself and the front wheel falls off. Lucky there was no traffic and he went straight into passenger side ditch. The wheel studs...

    40 x 50 Garage build

Make sure you actually need a new field, maybe you can just add more runs on the other end. Those trees you had there should have been removed years ago. I have a bunch of trees I should be removing too but I know I'm not going to do it until I have a problem. A problem that isn't going to smell...

    Small hobby/bike garage in Japan

Great looking bike shop. It must be something to drive that big Harley over there, the traffic is unbelievable. Nothing like timber framing in Japan using JAS lumber. I was in Japan twice to instruct Japanese carpenters how to build 2x4 housing. I was in a factory district in Osaka. The company...

New Shop Build in North East Michigan

Ken, you might want to spend a little more time thinking about infloor heat. You can put a coil in your wood stove and run water thru the floor. The concrete will stay warm overnight and you might wake up to a cold stove but the floor will still be warm. I got in a rush at the last minute and I...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Re: what did you do in your garage today? I installed my overhead hoist in my half built shop. I bought a used steel beam, made the posts, used my tractor to get it up there and got it bolted down. It'll be used for changing lawn mower blades, unloading trailers and lifting other stuff. I'm...

    Start of my new shop.

You will like the extra height, the extra $1 per stud isn't much but you need to account for whatever siding you are using in that increase too. You were right to go 28' wide, my shop is only 23' inside and it's a pain in the azz, wiring my car trailer today in the cold, had to leave the door...

    Redneck Urinal Plumbing

What about a shop vac, you could charge your buddies to use it and make enough to pay for a working septic? I'm thinking one of those 20 gal plastic barrels full of holes will work good for you. Like someone said, T a line off your eaves trough and it'll rinse things out good.

    Shared stud wall with house?

The drywall was likely legal when the house was built. The building code does change you know. Check your local current Building Code for todays approved system. Ask them about gas proofing too. If you redrywall then your next weak link will be the door frame, is it wood? Most door frames are...

    Heat/Cooling cycles destroying concrete floor

Luke, it is the porous stone in the concrete mixture that is absorbing water, then when it freezes it "pops" the concrete off. If you look close at each pop you should see the stone in the center. As stated a sealer will definately help, make sure you keep the sealer in good shape. Up here we...

Project "Machine Shed to Man Cave"

Omphaloskeptic, some pwf foundations preform better than concrete foundations due to the fact that concrete is usually just sprayed with tar and then if a crack developes the water can get in the crack. PWF are covered with poly which seals much better than tar or concrete. I don't have a pwf...

    RAD Garage

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN Nice shop, do you do any consulting? This is part of my 50x 100 shed, the rest is worse. I might need a few pointers for one of my shops. I'm renovating one of mine right now, decided this one was too far gone.

    How To Fix This?

I would take a few more pictures just so you have them on file. I would glue 5/8" plywood onto the bottom chord and the top 2x 10 or whatever is about 1/2" under it. So a piece about 24" x 8' long, make sure to cover the other joiner plate too. Then powernail or screwnail everything together...
