terminating single mode SC fiber connectors

Watch out for the pull eyes on pre terminated fiber. I wound up having to replace the one that came with mine as it wasn't well attached, and then broke. It's fine now but was a pain to pull. Probably ~200ft with a couple of bends

Shop lift that doesn’t need to be bolted down?

https://rotarylift.com/category/mobile-column-lifts/ Probably a bit more heavy duty than what you need but something like this might fit the bill

    Insulation recommendation

For what it's worth, I did a mix of spray foam, cellulose, and fiberglass batts. Spray foam was to seal around the eaves and truss carriers, make sure the shallow parts of the roof hit a high enough R-value to avoid ice dams. Fiberglass batts were in one interior wall between radiant heating...

Construction cost sanity check: western mass

This definitely sounds insane, what is he framing it with, silver 2x6s? I was right around $55 a square foot (in late 2022) for site prep, empty barn, and concrete floor, plus demo of an existing building.

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Car Factory: A 34x60 Home for Tools and Needy Cars

I do, at least partially. This was something I mocked up in Visio, mainly to check parking spacing, lift location, etc. The main layout is a ~33x40 garage space. For the framed area in the back, the wall thicknesses reduce it a bit, but the two downstairs rooms are intended to be a gym...

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Car Factory: A 34x60 Home for Tools and Needy Cars

I think the good advice for others on this is "don't". It's really not the best time to have a huge project going on while trying to juggle a major life adjustment. The timing was a bit weird for us (barn took longer to get moving than planned, pregnancy happened much sooner than expected). I...

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Car Factory: A 34x60 Home for Tools and Needy Cars

Thanks for the great feedback and encouragement. A long overdue update. Concrete blankets got pulled up a bit after the last post in January. From there it's been a lot of back and forth with the power company on how to get new service out to the barn, and wrangling some contractors. Also, in...

    Framing nail gun recommendation?

For a framing gun, I picked up a hitachi 30 degree for a shed I'm building. Was ~$150, absolute lifesaver. A poster below mentioned the LP fastening specs say to not overdrive things. Home depot and other home improvement places should rent you a siding/coil nailer for a pretty reasonable price...

    The *Mostly* BMW Garage Bolt-On

As the owner who maintains their own E60 535i, you must be a great friend. That's a lot of work to take on for someone else's car.

Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT From losing everything to being cash-poor and shop-rich in "only" five years!

In no particular order: I'd suggest the uno anyway, it's a bit easier to work with if you're not space constrained. Other than pinout differences, it shouldn't make much difference between the uno and nano though. There's an option to select which controller in the arduino IDE, it'll...

Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT From losing everything to being cash-poor and shop-rich in "only" five years!

After several years of mostly lurking in this thread, I might have something useful to contribute :) The cool thing with arduino is that, for the vast majority of things, someone else has been there before and helpfully left DIYs and code snippets all over the internet. A quick search for...

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Car Factory: A 34x60 Home for Tools and Needy Cars

An aside about the thread name, we'd let our neighbors know we were planning on building a new (much bigger) barn where the old one had been but I don't think they quite realized how big we meant. Once the posts and roof were on the barn, one of our neighbors texted my wife to say that it looked...

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Car Factory: A 34x60 Home for Tools and Needy Cars

We wound up taking down ~20-22 trees back there, between clearing out room for the new barn and getting rid of anything that looked like it might be likely to fall in that direction. The tree that fell was actually just over the property line, neighbor's tree. Insurance didn't seem to care...

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Car Factory: A 34x60 Home for Tools and Needy Cars

With the site prepped and kept clear of leaves, which is quite a bit of work in the fall, our builders got out and started construction. Things actually went both well and quickly, I'll let the photos do the talking here. Posts went up pretty quickly, despite a surprising amount of snow for...
