What can’t go out must go up – 25x24 build thread DC/MD

Re: What can’t go out must go up – 25x24 build thread DC/MD That...is a long time for a garage approval :shocking: I used Amish Built, inc out of Lancaster PA. They had an in house draftsman or at least one they worked with. The work was superb. 5 years later, no complaints. In fact, they...

Dear Sears (5 years from now)

"Pulling yourself up by your bootstraps". Loving the usage of this saying these days. The irony of course is that it is an impossible task (which was the original intent of the saying). The vast majority of people on this planet do not live under a system of government that *attempts* to...

Dear Sears (5 years from now)

I disagree. For one, I reject the idea of "smart" vs. "dumb". Intelligence and capability are not one dimensional attributes. It takes all kinds. There is room in the global economy for everyone. It may not seem that way for some at the moment, but i've seen transformations in my line of work...

Dear Sears (5 years from now)

Sears may bleed out and die. We'll see. GM would've went bust in '09 if not for the bail-out. Countless other American brands have seen their demise over the last 20yrs. The world is getting smaller by the day. Our current political climate leans toward blaming "others" for our poor,unfortunate...

Planning Stages help for 24x28 Garage

Yeah, get another quote or 3. We built in the DC area and got some crazy-**** quotes. I know you guys have deep frost lines in MA, but 21k is ridiculous. Keep looking, you'll find someone. Also consider late fall/early spring for better rates assuming it doesn't get crazy cold.

Selling a home with a nice garage

It really depends on the market in your location. Some universal truths though: -Sell the lifts or ship them to me. Make clear that they don't "convey" (label them as such) when buyers walk through. If you get lucky you can arrange a cash sale with the buyer outside of the transaction if they...

    Conduit to subpanel inside garage

If it were me I'd run new conduit in from the outside to an external LB to the exact spot you need to align with the subpanel knockout. Keep your existing stub-up around if you want to run some low-voltage wiring sometime in the future. When you trench, run both conduit together. And when you...

What did you do to save money during your build?

I second this advice. However, I do enjoy building things so "working on the shop" vs. "working in the shop" are pretty much on par for me. I contracted out the foundation/shell. I'm doing the rest and I find it very satisfying.

    Ideas For a Business Name?

I think it's cool you are asking the community to help name your biz. My advice is to consider whether this is going to always be a small / part time endeavor or if you have bigger ambitions. If it's the former, stick with a specific/descriptive name that leaves no room for interpretation. If...

    Decent 9x9 Garage door options?

I went with 9' tall doors for a few reasons. 1) It didn't cost any more vs 8.X ft 2) I can clear an SUV + rack mounted storage box 3) most importantly I can park my car + mt bike still on the roof rack 4) with 12' walls, 8' doors left a whole lot of siding above. i.e. two 9x9 doors looked more...

Compact excavator rental through Home Depot?

I would post a listing on craigslist under the "gigs" section. I think you might be surprised how cheap someone would offer to come with their own machine/manual labor and do it for you. I've done this several times with good results.

What can’t go out must go up – 25x24 build thread DC/MD

Thanks Roscoe. The concrete crew for the driveway did a solid job (much better than the foundation crew for the garage). 6 man team, many yrs experience. Let me know if you need the local recommendation. Still need to trench in power. I'll get to that this summer. We have a bun in the oven so...

What can’t go out must go up – 25x24 build thread DC/MD

Ah yes. Searched high and low for those. Couldn't stomach the $300+ price tag at most places. Northern tool to the rescue! Northern Tool Barn Lamp - $150 I'm satisfied with the quality. They put all of the bits needed to configure and mount the lamps in all orientations and neck lengths.
