    Definitely seems gimmicky to me. Aside from being more durable, it's difficult to imagine how the $300 vest is that much different than adding some bubble wrap between your sweater and jacket...

    It's 2 AM ... do you know where your garage door is?

    Is the garage close enough to the house to make hardwiring a sensor reasonable? If so, something along the lines of what this guy did might be an option. Instead of the small LED he used, you could connect a larger bulb and/or alarm.
