Yup. I've been doing it for years. Now if you leave it pushed too long it resets the clock to 12:00, but that is the only "bad" thing that I've seen happen.

I have a relay connected across the terminals on the smart panel so I can control it with my home automation system. Works fine, but if you close the relay for more then a second or so it will reset the time on the smart panel. A standard N/O push button should work fine wired the same way...
If it is on the same transformer as your house X10 or another carrier line based automation UPB, Insteon might work. You can also check into Z-wave. It is based on a wireless mesh network design and might be able to reach your garage. I only have experience with X10. A lot of home automation...
