Wilton Mechanic 1645 Vise pin for the spindle nut

I am restoring a Wilton 1645 Mechanic's Vise, unknown date of manufacture. The pin securing the spindle nut was broken. It appears to be 3/16" diameter and was about 1-3/8" long. What type of metal pin should I use? Soft vs hardened metal.
