Had a good rainy weekend here so finally got around to making up some proper swivel locks for the #75. The originals had been replaced with bolts. A chunk of Nissan steering rod got processed through the new & improved machine shop...
A little patina already on the handles but that was the...
Here's my take. I made the pivot & clamp carrier out of scrap with a little help from lathe & welder.
The more rigid the better. If doing it again I'd use bigger diameter aluminium pipe, but what I used was free & in the junk pile... Top pivot also needs to be really beefy & well mounted to...
Must be time for another update. Back in March 2020 NZ went into a month+ of a quite strict covid lockdown, no hardware stores open. Fortunately we had just got stocked up for a couple of projects at home so had plenty to entertain ourselves with, but some improvisation was definitely going to...
I'd definitely ask them about Paramo parts, they have the drawings & equipment to make up lots of British vice parts that aren't listed on the website - like the pipe jaw insert for my 75. Plus, some Record parts also fit Paramo eg the No.6 jaw inserts.
Cheers

Modern English iron for some old English iron.
The jaws on the trusty Record No5 I inherited from my dad were getting a bit worn, they were supposedly available from Record as they still make the No5 in China, but I had never found them actually for sale anywhere. While hunting down new jaws...
My new jaws for the 75 arrived, all the way from Vice Works UK & they fitted perfectly.
The new pipe jaw:
So she's now in service. I have found a Whitworth die I can borrow to make proper swivel locks but that will have to wait a few weeks until some more urgent projects are out of the...
Nice! My one does not have any numbers under the main casting like that.
I am currently trying to see if I can borrow a 1/2" Whitworth die from somewhere, if I can do that I'll machine up some blanks for the swivel locks & hand cut the threads. (my wobbly old Atlas lathe is not accurate enough...
Back together with the aid of special tool 0001 to put the split pin back in.
Operates pretty smoothly after a clean and lube.
Making up some proper swivel locks is the next job while I wait for the new jaws.

Thanks, another good thing about the design that occurred to me is that as the tube is also the spindle nut, it would be fairly straightforward for any decent machinist to lathe up a new one if it was worn out.
Paint is now on - Wattyl Epoxy Gloss Enamel - it looked to have the best potential...
Thanks, for the style of vice it is quite burly - of course usually exposed screw vice are fairly small & lightweight, but not this one.
There seem to have been a few variations of the No. 75, the lettering on mine is different from the catalog pic too. I'd be interested to know if any of the...
Posted this one up in the Vise thread, needs it's own thread though I think.
My uncle gave me this vice a couple of weeks ago, what a guy! It was lying under his bench with another smaller Record & he decided he didn't need the bigger one.
I had seen a pic somewhere before of these...
Thanks, she'll be right. I mostly use TIG & this vice has to be open a fair way before the working part of the screw is exposed. Will likely make a little cover. I will definitely make a tube to cover the other end of the screw to keep the grinding dust off.
Thanks for the tip on anti spatter...
Christmas came early for me last weekend when my Uncle gave me this cool Record 75. He'd had it lying around for a while but decided it was too big & he had smaller vice to use anyway.
A nice companion for my trusty No5. The jaws are fairly worn but otherwise it's in pretty good shape for...
About time for another update instead of just lurking around looking at everyone else's cool stuff...
We have been doing more working in the shed than on the shed lately, with a few more furniture projects for the house. I did design some side tables for the couch in such a way that I had to...
Great looking shop & your bikes are beautiful! Nothing like a nice steel frame, my main ride is a SIR9 SS.
I need a decent bike workstand in my shed, good to check out what the pro's use. Park tool stuff is $$$ over here though!
Cheers
