I just ran an extension cord to a non-GFCI outlet and it works fine. The freezer light is coming on when the door is open, but the motor hasn't tried to turn on. Yes, it is an upright frost-free freezer.

I have a GFCI circuit in my garage. When I went to take the trash out today the garage door didn't open, and it ended up being because the GFCI circuit that everything in the garage is on had tripped. So I did some experimenting - it's fine with anything else plugged in, but it trips immediately...
