That's part of my thought process as well. I hate to spend a crazy amount on jaws that are probably worth more than the vise.
I think I will go the aluminum route and keep looking for a good vintage Wilton vise (or more) for my other needs.
I like this idea. I know I can get the aluminum cheap enough and I can drill the holes easy enough. I want to get a Wilton or two, but haven't found the right deal yet.
