    The VISES of Garage Journal

A friend of mine gave me this old Wilton. He said it is about 30 years old. There is no COO anywhere on it. I seem to remember Wiltons were made in Taiwan at some point. The only markings are the numbers 75 and 50 on the sides of the towers. The original color was a dark grey, similar to what is...

    Any more news about SK?

Doing some work on one of my work benches this afternoon and realized I have 5 of the 3/8" ratchets, but only on each of the 1/2" and the 3/4" drive ratchets. Better get duplicates of those before I need them.

    Show your Railroad Rail Anvils

Thanks for the info. I'll scout around and see if I can find a couple of them for two of my workbenches.

    Show your Railroad Rail Anvils

I too, am interested in this. I have my heavy anvil, but it isn't close to my work bench. On my major workbench, I have a little HF 15lb. anvil that does fine, but I have to use a hammer (20 oz.) that is lighter than my blacksmith hammers so the little anvil won't crack. Would like to pick up a...

    Ignition wrenches ???

When I was doing tune up work years ago, I never had a need for these wrenches. Never had one in my box. But now that I have read this thread, I realize the day might come when I will need a miniature wrench. Based on four.cycle's recommendation above, I went to ebay and found what I might need...

Ridgid pliers- anyone have these or remember them?

I remember seeing a pair of slip joint pliers in my Father's toolbox 50 years ago or so. They were made by Channel Lock, and I always thought they were the original manufacturer of that type of plier. I probably have that pair of pliers in one of my tool boxes/bags.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

For years the states have been pressuring online retailers to charge and collect sales and use tax for them. Amazon came onboard (at least in my state) several years ago. Now it appears ebay is doing the same. In my state, and in most states, the tax is levied not just on in state sales, but on...

Project Farm : Which Car Jump Starter Is Best? Let's find out!

That's what I initially thought as well. Then he went to the Ford 5000, removed the battery from the system and did the testing without the battery. Some cranked it just fine. The others cranked, but not as well. So, it appears a battery in the car is not needed for the lithium packs to start...

Let's Hear it for the Old Gray/Red Sears Craftsman Tool Chests and Cabinets (60s/70s)

Good job. I have the smaller version of that chest and cabinet combo. Thanks for the tip about the HF drawer liners. I have a tool box in the trunk of my car (my first Craftsman box from 1970), and the tools slide around without restraint when I make a turn. Will try those drawer liners to see...

Best way to get surface rust off tools

I've had good results in refinishing heavily rusted bench vises and other tools using Evaporust. Just finished a pair of needle nose pliers this afternoon that were heavily rusted and rusted closed. After 3 days in the solution, all rust was gone and they were ready for a bit of steel wool...

    Anvil stand completed...

Now that is cool. I especially like the charred look. I was planning on doing the same thing with 4 x 4s, then I decided to use a large stump and cut it down to a height of 26," which is what I need with the height of my anvil. Seeing how well yours turned out, I may rethink my decision to use...

Love the color of that natural iron.

It's Rustoleum's Soft Iron Primer/Paint. Even though it says it is primer combined with the paint, I primer the metal first and then paint.

@mxdev: I too like the bare iron look, but it draws rust like a magnet, so I always paint. I have found a paint that closely matches the bare look. I used it on a cheap little anvil, and it looks almost like the real thing.

Chop: That Wilton is worth a clean up and painting, rather than a clean up and clear coating. A very nice find.
