    Chris' Garage Update

Sorry, been away for a while. The shed is done. The garage is all cleared out and insulated. I waxed the car inside the garage today. 46 degrees outside but it was a toasty 70 inside and I don't even have a heater in there yet. Next up is sheet rock, tape and spackle.

It's not exactly a garage but....

Really nice job! How long did it take? Did you work alone or have some help? The exterior details must have taken a long time but you really nailed it.

    Moving cars sideways.

My 2 car garage fits a third vehicle across the back if it's parallel with the back wall. I've been using dollys for years to store the third car during the winter. The only hassle is jacking the car up to get the dollys under the wheels. There are nice new dolly's that have a built in lift...

Construction questions - rafters and decking

Roof is on. I went with 1/2 plywood decking, not OSB. I compared the two and saw a lot more flex in the OSB. I would use the OSB if I was using 3/4, but at 1/2" OSB did not seem rigid enough. Toe nailing rafter sides worked out fine. Like nailing anything else the key is to hit it hard and...

    Challenger Coming together!!

Looks great, Challengers rock. You're going to laugh but I'm a little jealous. The best time for me was when my car was in parts all over the garage and there was always work to do. Now that it's done I don't spend a whole lot of time with it.:(

    Chris' Garage Update

The roof is on the shed! At least the roof decking is in place. It was amazing how rigid the whole structure became once the decking was attached. I had to rebuild the gable ends due to some minor angle miscalculations but it's done and looks good. Still left to go are gable siding, doors...

Construction questions - rafters and decking

Good tips on the collar ties/triangle plates. I will definately be adding one or the other. I guess after nailing 20 rafters my toe nailing skills should improve. I'll get some pixs up this weekend.

Construction questions - rafters and decking

Some of you may know I'm building a simple 8x12 shed for storage to clean out the garage. My first question is how do you nail the rafters to the ridge beam and top sill? I'm using 2x4's 16" o.c. with a span of 5'. I can get one 16d nail in from the top on each end but that doesn't seem like...

    Chris' Garage Update

Hey Mike, Glad to have some company. The attic is accessible from a set of stairs around the back. The garage is built into a hill so the back wall is about 7' below grade. There is only about 5' height in the attic so I won't be finishing that space, storage only. I did not install a ton...

    Chris' Garage Update

Hey zimpala are you saying that I should bend the paper sides of the insulation down toward the floor and push the insulation up into the joist cavity and then staple on the insides of the joists? I guess that makes sense in terms of leaving a nice flat surface for the wall board. What about...

    Chris' Garage Update

Major progress in the last week. I got started on insulating the garage ceiling. I'd like to get that done before the cold weather sets in. Also began construction on the shed. After pricing some pre-build sheds locally and from Lowes/HD etc I decided to go ahead and build it myself. It is...
