Derusting Question - Vinegar / Salt

I love the electrolysis de-rusting method, followed by a bath in POR-15 Metal Prep to give it a zinc phosphate coating.

Subaru wanted $50 apiece for the rear exhaust hangers on my SVX.

    Solar powered fueling station

Short version: Can a solar battery tender and 12V battery be used to run a 12V fuel transfer pump? For say 30 gallons at a time, once a day. Long version: My flying club has a 500-gallon tank with a manual crank pump that we use to refuel our planes. It works, but when you've got an airplane...

Should a Torque Wrench Be Used When Changing Brake Pads

Excellent points, just want to add one small gotcha: Some folks go nuts with the anti-seize (particularly up here where they make the roads out of salt in the winter), especially between the rotor and hub face. Overdoing this can basically form a liquid gasket between the rotor and hub. The lug...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Not so much in the garage, but in front of it. Oil change day for the Legacy:

    Who Has THE Smallest Garage?!

At a previous house I was renting with friends we shared a 10x24-ish garage. I had my car in there for a winter while I rebuilt the rear suspension and it was challenging, because we also stored 4 or 5 spare set of wheels (winter/summer tires), a couple bicycles, camping gear, lawn stuff...

    Rusted Compressor Tank

A fellow was killed near my hometown a couple years ago in a compressor explosion. He initially lost his lower leg but complications developed overnight and he didn't survive. It was a story that many of us have lived, three guys hanging out and working on a car together. Pressure vessels are...

    the most amazng tool ever

Those are my two primary garage rules. Everything's a hammer, and everything's a prybar. And if something doesn't work you need a bigger hammer/prybar.

    How do you do it?

Pace yourself. It's tempting to ring up the credit and buy all of the toys in one go but that can bury you forever, even with a better than average income. My fiance and I just bought our first house in November. We found a place for a low enough purchase price that I can afford it on my own...

    Show us your welding projects

A couple of my amateur projects: Subaru wanted $50 each for these hangers that rusted out (car takes 2). $20 and a couple hours later I had my own. Lighter too, the originals were overkill. And the exhaust I built for the car:

How long to expect a hydralic jack to hold up a car?

Real life story: I used to work in the garage at Canadian Tire while I was attending school. One day a guy came in with a flat on his boat trailer (single axle light trailer that was badly overloaded). One of the other tire monkeys used a jack to lift and hold the trailer while he replaced the...

How long to expect a hydralic jack to hold up a car?

Yep! I used to work in a 10' wide garage with the car pushed right to one side. To get the stands in on that side I had to slide under the car while it was held by the jack. Much more scary than pulling a 150lb transmission lying on my back. Glad I have more space now.

What's the temperature in your 'GARAGE' ?

I don't know the exact temperature, but I have a freezer in there that hasn't had to fire up in weeks and snow that doesn't melt. Also found a rock hard mouse in the garbage can yesterday. Not exactly toasty. I can't wait to insulate it and install heat.
