Yes, if you go vertical you can go type B and it gets much cheaper. I was the opposite of you, I had purchased all type-B to go vertical, then changed my mind after I got into it to go horizontal. I had purchased the Amerivent double wall stuff from Menards - they have a nice isle of these...

Yes, you would normally just need a firestop... but if you're going to add spray foam, you might want to use a wall thimble - what is the thickness of the foam?

Just a note on using the Ecobee... I think the lowest temperature setting is 45 degrees. Depending on your garage situation, this might be too high... I wanted one that just keeps it above freezing when not actively being out there. Not many will go down to 35.

That seem really high to me penright, especially since you have gas stubbed already. Black pipe would make it more tedious, but there are other flexible options other than copper... I was very close to using CSST, but chose copper for consistency and it was also slightly cheaper. In addition...

Not as nice as LX's install (1st time doing anything like this), but here's how mine turned out this weekend. I ended up using the universal adapter and just removed the clamp on the heater side to allow me to push it fully onto the heater. Just doing a little retrospect tonight after cleaning...
