I would use the 12" bucket, the little bit of extra width will help with ease of installation and won't make an appreciable different once back filled.

I agree, the bigger issue to me is the attachment or lack there of. Will the post fail if not secured, most likely not. But if it gets bumped by a car pulling in... attachment may we what keeps it in place.
