Great. Re the holes - the Picard of London versions mostly have one hole each side but I have similar with 3 holes and no holes.

supplementary question --- anyone know what the shallow holes at the ends of the jaw facings are? -- I think on certain types this might be where the insert is swaged - but doesn't apply to the holes on various 'Boley-type' vises of different makes with simple screw-in jaws ---- I could imagine...

Chance look at something else -- I think it's German - the mono is for Meier und Weichelt and HSB is related/same -- any more info on company? any connection to other jeweller/watchmaker vise makers? -several had almost the same design. - found that M&W were from Leipzig - prewar to 50s E...

puzzle to me -- very like the German/Swiss Boley/Leiden or the English Picard Freres vises - 60mm jaw width - size 0 is an English sizing for 2 1/2in - and has the logo/monogram W with man? - sure I've seen that somewhere - UK eb seller (I've just received this) had it as US catalog seller and...

yup -- crossed my mind - same shape, but most of such I have seen are weld fab - not sure a casting would take the leverage of that type of hinge?

something diff -- 3 "instrument vises" - larger 2in, smaller 1in width jaws - could be tool-room or apprentce-made but cast not machined bases

nice find -- in the 1930s(?) Rededa of Sheffield UK patented and made a woodworking vice using this simple lift, buttress thread and drop quick positioning - works well, but it does limit the maximum opening so not good for big vises

great - - ((I see that the 'Viotel' trademark says 'English Manufacture' )) also see 'incassable' -- ie unbreakable - malleable cast iron?

Made in England 1 3/4in jaw width Picard & Frere vise (stamped trademark P in ace of spades) - in their watch/clock/jewellers London supply store catalog from about 1900-50 - made in larger sizes and clamp-on/swivel similar to German/Swiss Boley-Leinen

"STAR" was also a UK brand - fairly standard design of bench vice/vise like Parkinson or Record c1930 - not common

    The VISES of Garage Journal

there is some shared history - but separate companies, both Sheffield, England ---- there are any number of English vice/vise makers with very similar designs -- mostly evolved from 1870/80s vises of Parkinson's (up to 1975) of Shipley, Bradford (about 50 miles NW of Sheffield) - Record started...

here's a Fortis, steel, with the swivel jaws, and the later French Noveto, with same ---- I did have some link to Jerrim patent, but can't find just now ----------- I realise a distinguishing feature of the small Wilder is that the 2 swivelling jaws are themselves held in a swivelling turret -...
