Opinions needed. I found an older Hisey-Wolf grinder for sale semi-locally; probably 60's production judging from the squared wheel guards, 10+" machine, 1 HP, 1800rpm, 440v. As best I can tell, it's in 60-ish% condition; what's present is in okay shape - no serious damage in the photos...

Yep, that would have gotten it a bit better-looking on the top, but like I said, I'm a very annoying sort of person. The vise was perfectly serviceable as it sat, so I didn't really even need to take it apart. For that matter, I didn't even need to clean it; I could have just bolted it down...

Okay, follow-up question on paint. I've been looking at threads here and there, and it seems like these vises exist in a variety of colors; this one is a strange blue-grey that's hard to match, but I've seen black, blue, charcoal grey, etc. I also don't yet have a good system for painting...

I don't know enough about it to either confirm or deny these allegations...but I'm thinking that the place I went simply might not carry that particular model. We ended up going with a unit that is rated for a 2HP motor; there seems to be little harm in a slight oversize.

I'm excited to see what it'll do. We couldn't!

Question: what motor is on your PM1200? Mine is a 1.5HP and it was easier to get a 230v-in unit to run it. I know it would draw more amps, but being able to run that drill on a standard outlet would have been nice...

Larry; thanks, and thanks for the links. Somehow, when I looked up the vise before, I didn't see "base plate" on the parts list...so that was my mistake and would have saved us all some time. However, I've now rectified that omission, and I've found that the cost of a replacement baseplate is...

To quote exact figures: a decent VFD for my motor priced out at $215, all-in. A quality motor, equivalent to what I already have, was $445. I'm sure that some of that is due to local supply and demand, but VFDs need not be super-expensive for a home shop. Also, Hoosier, that's a dope motor...

Post some results/impressions if you don't mind; I'm about to replace the belt on my 1200.
