    PEX - Educate Me

Pex is easier to use most of the time unless you have to add hangers or need it to stay straight. Anything that has to look half decent should be copper. It also breaks down in uv light, natural or artificial. I have had to change sections that were leaking over top of pot lights in a t-bar...

Running 220 power for an electric garage heater

That's averaging at 12 cents/kwh, not sure what you pay. I'm raising the temp about 35 degrees F. If you're only raising it 10 it wouldn't be as much. I figure $500/year isn't too bad especially because I can write it off.

Help me troubleshoot this heater please.

Does quit working mean no heat from element, no fan or both? The manual says there's a fan delay until the element heats up so it won't run if the element is gone. The obvious is make sure there's 220 v or 221, whatever it takes, at the heater. You can do an amp test at the panel and a...

    infrared tube heater question

I'm thinking of a radiant heater as well. The problem is directing it. It's like using the sun to heat your garage( do you like the sun? I can give you that), it's fantastic until there's a cloud or you go behind something. That's why there's cold spots. No tube or it's blocked and basically no...

    Pro's & Con's of Glycol

Call the boiler company. I talked to Navien and they want less than 25% glycol. We use non-toxic propylene from the wholesaler.

Running 220 power for an electric garage heater

The white can be used as a conductor, it should be taped black in the panel and the box. Only the green is a specified colour. I got that one wrong on an electrical exam for my g3. I'm using a 4800 watt construction heater in my shop. At -7-10 C and 10 C inside it was on for about 5 minutes and...

    The "Normal Person" Garage

Normal was your first pictures. It's nicer than my living room. I don't even have a tv. And I would love some pot lights, too. A few suggestions/ideas. For the hvac door, you will probably need a grill to allow combustion air in. Before you pretty that up, have you thought about a sink? It...

    Building storage shelves

Nothing is supposed to be stored in your garage. Move it all back to the wife's. I built a basic one with 3 shelves for my basement and tool storage in my garage with a sheet of plywood and 8- 2x4's. We made some angle brackets out of a bed frame and use some scrap 2x8's in my buddy's garage...

Input on How To Repair some cast iron sewage drain joints needed.

I don't think the joint would be leaking unless it's cracked and the stack is plugged. Usually the pipe splits not the hub. It probably is the toilet. Wrap something around the pipe above the hub and see if it gets wet. No point paying to fix anything until you get a better idea of what's wrong...

    Electric Boiler for Hydronics ??

I've done a few electric boilers, the big problem is the power needed. I think they needed two 60-100 amp breakers. The owner was happy enough with them to install one in his house as well for baseboard rads. An electric hwt might work, the elements are about 15,000 btuh and if you crank up the...

Advice for in floor heat design

They run a similar system in some of the townhouses around here but with baseboard. One of the issues is stagnant water in the summer in the piping. Also an open system lets oxygen in which can erode the metal piping and fittings. I think you would have to have a bypass or a mixing valve to draw...

Advice for in floor heat design

Possibly. Winter temps are pretty mild there, correct? How many people in the house? It would have to be a pretty large tank, 60 gal at least. You would need a heat exchanger, pumps, controls, etc. Basic info should be online or ask at the wholesaler about it.

Modine heater burners won't light, but fan kicks on

You might have bled the line yet, it can take a little bit to do it. You can keep turning off the unit when it kicks out. Or you can turn off the valve at the unit and partially open the union then open the valve until you smell gas. Retighten the union, turn on valve, soap test the joints and...

    pvc flue outlet/pipe

I use concentric if possible, two pipes usually look like you spent most of the day huffing the glue. Because of space I had to go with 2 separate 3" vents and the intake frosts up once in awhile if it's windy. It's a pain because it's at a rental and I have to remember and check it before they...
