Blacksmith vises 101 companies that made them, catalogs and history show and tell all

Drivesitfar suggested I post this Columbian 6" jaw blacksmith vise over here. I see why. :) I'd like to tear this thing down and clean it up, but I have 1 question. Am I going to have an issue with getting it back together because of the spring? Like am I going to have to somehow compress...

Thanks, Drive, and Outlaw... I'll post updates when I get started. I'm still working on my garage rehab and setting up, which coincidentally, brought me to GJ to begin with. I think I was searching for "garage organization". :D

Thanks Drive and Robert! Drivesitfar: You're right, it won't be my last. :) My neighbor gave me a Columbian blacksmith vise he's had for a long time, but hasn't used in decades. 6" jaws and 41" tall. He worked at the local utility company, and when they got rid of their blacksmith...

VISE REPAIR 101 all vise repairs, lubricants, sources for parts and the tricks to fix

Finished, but I need to figure out a pin for the swivel back jaw, that was froze solid before I started. Took 3 days, Friday-Sunday. Have to say, I am quite satisfied with it. The project also gave me a greater appreciation for the work all of you put into your restorations! BTW, Outlawmws...

VISE REPAIR 101 all vise repairs, lubricants, sources for parts and the tricks to fix

Inspired by the posts here, I decided to make my first attempt at restoring a vintage Reed No304 I inherited from my grandfather. I opted not to fill the imperfections. Attached are the before pictures. I'll add more.

Everything you need to know about bench vises...

Thanks for your response, Outlawmws. I'll have to soak that side with some penetrating fluid and see if I can get the swivel jaw to move. Currently that handle is just a bolt with a nut on the end. I have since removed it. I'm hoping to find something more original than all thread rod...

Everything you need to know about bench vises...

I have a Reed vise I inherited from my grandfather. It has "NO 304" on one side, and the PAT. DEC. 24, 1912 PAT. AUG. 17, 1914 along with REED MFG. CO. ERIE, PA. U.S.A. on the other side. I have not been able to find out much about this particular vise after days of searching on-line. It's in...

Tool chest review - Sears, Tractor Supply, Lowes, Home Depot, Harbor Freight

Thanks for the great review Mister Moose! I'd also like to thank everyone that gave their feedback. Normally I just read forums and move on. I can't even remember the last time I registered on one. After reading all the comments on all the pages of this post I felt obligated to join the...
