Welding mild steel to hard mystery plate

There are Problem Solver Welding Electrodes that are a stick welder solution for joining mystery metals. All must be ferrous but wildly different tensile strengths and carbon content.

Welding aluminium for first time ever and its popping like tiny firecracker

Rule out an air leak. Check hoses and fitting tightness.

    welding pinholes in sheetmetal,TIG?

Silicon Bronze rod if TIG or SiB spool if MIG will manage your lower heat due to thin sheet metal concern. Pure Argon and DCEP.

Speed Handles --- What They Good For?

Extra vote for the reassembly of things..I use mine for valve covers and oil pans and anything that uses gaskets or O-rings. I can feel the torque and tension so I don’t rip the sealing and return to the leak.

Making a simple vintage style garden gate

is there a Makerspace or equivalent in your area? There are a bunch, by different names maybe, in the US. Join up if possible. Some have forges and tooling and people around ready to assist.

    Calipers!! Digital or Dial?

I’ve used both though I prefer the never needs a battery dial. Whichever I reach for in a project, I try to use it all the way through til the end. I’m not having some variance of measurement between two instruments. If one is off by a micron, then it will likely be the same uniformly.

Reinforcing butcher block; screws, dowels, biscuits, etc.

Similar situation I used Titebond 3 and then I glued and biscuited Breadboards at the ends. It’s rock solid.

1/4" Breaker Bar....Who Uses Them and What For?

Yep. Still use it to crank stubborn small diameter hardware loose. Refasten with a speed handle. Decidedly old school.

Need Info on I.D. of Old Tool Plane

Soak the ferrous parts in Metal Rescue and rinse with water. This and similar products lie Evapo Rust do an amazing job without eating into the parent metal like muriatic acid. Sharpen the blade and reassemble.

When the deal is too good to pass up, but you don't really need it

I’ll sometimes get a better version of something I already own. But when asked how much I’ve spent on tools I answer with imagine how much I’ve saved by owning and using them.

    Welding input info needed

If it’s not too late see about easy grind wire. Esab has a line of it. That way you won’t warp when your grinding them smooth when you did such a good job of avoiding it while welding.

When do you “let the tool do the job” or put force into it?

When the material curls out, you’re at the right speed, torque and pressure. It’s most apparent using a drill press (operative word is ‘press’). As to the saying, buffers with compound on the wheels have taught me about letting the tool do the work.

    Tig water chiller coolant?

I use De-ionized water. Gallon jugs from the grocery store availability.

Unbelievable - Unable to weld aluminum rod

I’m in agreement with much offered here. It looks like air contamination to me as well. Maybe a gas hose leak along the way, sometimes as simple as a loose fitting. 4043 or 5356 rod will likely weld one when the other won’t. And finally, some Al alloys are not weldable with anything us out of...

What is 'Super 12' Stick Rod Good For?

It’s been called “problem solver” rod. Allstate has done it and a few other companies. It certainly has its place. It’s for marrying together unknown steels. Picture having salvage steels and needing to build something useful.....armor plate to unknown grade chain to build a 500 yard Gong for...
