Use them all the time, but I do electrical and electronics work, where they seem to be used a little more than in the automotive world. Great for tightening terminal lugs, ground screws, stand-offs, etc.
I think the idea is that since it's a larger fastener, it needs more torque, so the handle for the larger fastener has more surface area for your hand to make contact with, allowing you to apply more force. That's the best I can come up with.
