    Thanks for your help, info and comments, I found a local person who specializes in air compressors who came over to see it and he said it's a home made unit with a refrigeration compressor. Just doing updates to the unit now to bring it up to par.

    the electric motor runs at 1750 rpm. I see that there are 2hp motors with the same rpm rating. was hoping for a bit more without over heating the pump. is there a tester I can hook up to the compressor or a method of finding out what the cfm and psi rating on this unit? i wish it had the metal...

    possible. the gentleman who's auction it came from, was known for rebuilding airplane parts. looks strong enough to handle a larger engine than 3/4HP!!
