I Googled and can see why you suggested that. However, the tapered tip of the opposing (non-brass) jaw matches the patent I discovered above and fits the purpose of fixing a piano key felt. Thanks for the education!

I picked these up because they are weird. Or maybe that’s me. I can’t sleep til I know what they are for… help me Obi Wan.

My battery terminal spreader is much older and is listed as No. 20. Any idea when they started making these. Mine came from my Dad's shop but he isn't around to tell me when he bought it...
