Hi Jim, Thanks for putting together this great Craftsman study. I just got around to organizing my Craftsman ratchets somewhat, and I found one which does not seem to fit any of your categories. It is basically a Type 7 (-V- 43785), but it has no oil hole.

These sockets were typically used with a brace, but Billings & Spencer also offered an accessory drive handle for them. It had two tapered square openings.

I ran across a Pierce-Arrow / Fairmount Ball Peen Hammer at a swap meet about two years ago. It was marked with the name Fairmount, not the logo as on this one. I paid $2 for it, and I sold it on eBay for over $60.

These are actually very similar to early Hinsdale sockets. The Alloy Artifacts website says that Hinsdale made sockets for several retailers. The picture is from the A-A website.

Here are some photos of a Snap-On PF-87 and a Craftsman CF-87 ratchet (both 3/8" drive). The Snap-On has a pin retainer, and the Craftsman has a ball retainer, but the overall construction is identical. I think that it is clear that Snap-On made both of these. As for the C-98, the patent...

The Craftsman handle does look similar to the Hinsdale, but there are some differences. The Hinsdale is about 7/16" thick, the Crafsman is a bit over 1/2". The Hindale knurled panel is flatter, the Craftsman knurling wraps around the edges. The recesses are much deeper on the Craftsman. I got...
