That sounds like a good test, bypassing intermediate components. But where exactly is the hot side of the contactor coil? Is it the terminal in line with L1 but on the underside of the coil (below left end of the white sticker with the number 1231132)?

Wow, that's impressive, MTW! Unfortunately, the neutral connected to white wire's left side terminal doesn't seem to work. With the hot input on L1, when I push the start button, the relay just chatters and the motor budges a little. Does this suggest a problem with the contactor itself?
