I took the scenic route getting my degree (3 majors, 4 universities, and 3 junior colleges. Sigh.), so there's some relevant work history before I graduated...
Ran a bicycle shop for 3.5 years (Where I assembled ~2,000 bikes over that time.). So. Many. Bicycles.
During my final run at college I did multiple internships working on composite centrifuge parts. That led to a job at Hexcel Composites R&D doing material and process development (Pre-preg Tow as used in advanced fiber placement.) when I graduated. Boeing was my main customer. Good times.
I left Hexcel to be part of a design team in the contract furniture industry (I have a background in furniture design, so that change isn't as weird as it sounds. Really.). That gig led to a 7 year run at IDEO product design wearing many different hats.
When I left IDEO I stayed independent and am now 12 years into that role. I spend about a third of my time sitting in-house at clients, often start-ups, as a mechanical engineer (often the only one) doing new product development across a bunch of different industries. The rest of my time is working directly for clients from home doing everything from strategy to CAD (SolidWorks).
Trying to get my 1946 house remodeled / updated. Wrenching on my '94 BMW 325i.
