I also modified a V18 hatchet and it still works great 2 years later.
I have ran across a couple tools that were V18/V28. So my guess is that they're probably the same motors, switches, etc. But I have bothered to cross check parts.
No, the blocks only change the alignment of the tabs you break off. The block is the black piece in the center of the base.
The battery I was using didn't slide off before I notched the base. Even one notch will hold the battery on, but I wanted to make it as secure as possible.
For those following this thread who were interested in seeing the modification; here is the link.

So I wanted a 1/4" Impact Driver for my 28v lineup which Milwaukee never offered.
I ordered 2 new V18 0881-20 Impact Drivers. On the bottom there is a black block with two offset tabs. If you notice there is one large centered tab on the 28v tools. You can order the 28v block from...
I really like the M28 over the V28. The nose is a little over an inch shorter. It is considerably lighter. It even feels stronger. The light seems to be in a poor location; but that beats no light. The battery only attaches from the nose side ( unable to be easily modified like the grinder...
This is the block I will be using. It is from the 28v drill. It is located in the base of the handle where the battery attaches. I don't remember exactly but on my hatchet I think it was toward the side and on the 28v stuff it was center. I didn't have any problems with the battery holding on...
As far as the group purchase I am in for one jigsaw and one die grinder. I would have to wait until summer on the batteries but would want 4+ depending on price we could get. I am on a budget as I can't build fences in the snow.
Thanks for chiming in. This is basically what I wanted to know. I was considering just grinding the tabs off. I will have to order the blocks from a 28 volt instead. I would prefer spending an extra 5 bucks per impact to taping the batteries on. I will order the impacts and blocks tonight and...
I will let you know my opinion of the drill when it arrives. Expected Monday.
I am also considering the fuel sds I found it on ebay $309 but it doesn't say if they are an authorized seller for warranty purposes.
One of my drills is CR..but two are USA. My 6 1/2 is USA, I have been looking for a second but noticed the China. I also have a CR 4" grinder but will keep looking for a USA model.
I have never had the V18 but they are USA Milwaukee so I have no doubt in them being great tools. :)
The NiCad never did well for me in the winter. I have considered having some V18 packs built out of Red Lithium equivalent cells. Not having any old V18 packs, I am leaning towards the mod to...
