I have a similar situation and am looking for the same guidance. Circuit already in detached garage with no subpanel, likely 20A because only runs some lights and a garage door opener with some outlets.

Sounds like a good plan to me. I would investigate what the first contractor suggested a bit more, maybe it is what you are looking for stated differently.
