Any chance this contraption would work? Question about mounting a minisplit on my van

88f degrees inside the van, AC is blowing extremely cold air while using about 1000W. In retrospect mounting it straight above the bed was a mistake since the air hits you right in the face, but I'll take this problem over it not working :)

Any chance this contraption would work? Question about mounting a minisplit on my van

Using a friend's nice two stage vacuum pump I was able to pull a good vacuum yesterday. I released the refrigerant and turned on the AC. So far so good! I measured ~58f coming out of it, but it was pretty cold outside so it didn't have to work too hard to get to that. It was consuming around...

Any chance this contraption would work? Question about mounting a minisplit on my van

I've had the manifold gauge hooked up for a week at this point, at 200PSI and haven't seen a drop. Gonna try vacuuming again tomorrow with new vacuum oil and a larger-diameter vacuum hose and hopefully would get satisfactory results.

Any chance this contraption would work? Question about mounting a minisplit on my van

I so wish they had that. It is theoretically possible to open the unit, pump out the gas, detach the compressor, turn it 90 degrees somehow, and then you could operate flat. It's the compressor's lubrication that's the issue with tilting the unit. However, that is beyond my capabilities.

Any chance this contraption would work? Question about mounting a minisplit on my van

My understanding is for that I would need an oxy-acetylene setup, which I do not have and have never used, and am hesitant in trying to use without someone to guide me so that I don't burn my workshop down :( The minisplit manufacturer would void the warranty if any brazing took place to the...

Any chance this contraption would work? Question about mounting a minisplit on my van

I'm wondering, do you feel like anchoring using the AC feet is sufficiently strong? I added a cross bar that clamps down on the AC as a safety measure since I wasn't sure if the AC's sheet metal spot welds (at least in my AC that seems to be how the feet are attached to the body). In the...

Any chance this contraption would work? Question about mounting a minisplit on my van

fitter30, thank you! That looks like a great solution. The 10K BTU seems to be out of stock, bug regardless, I'm curious if it is actually able to deliver that performance. This would be a much more subtle approach... In the meanwhile,I mounted the AC last night. I still need to hook it up.

Any chance this contraption would work? Question about mounting a minisplit on my van

Well, I'll be happy to report my results once I finish installing it :) Worst case I can always take it out.

Any chance this contraption would work? Question about mounting a minisplit on my van

That is a good question. I've been wondering if that is an actual concern. I guess you could always count on assholes being assholes :( Perhaps I should switch to using Tamper-Resistant Torx fasteners? Someone could obviously anglegrind the thing out, or show up with a full kit, but how likely...

Any chance this contraption would work? Question about mounting a minisplit on my van

consti2tion - nice project! I keep fantasizing about a skoolie if I ever live in a place that has room for such an adventure. The doors in my van go all the way up so there's no room for that. Also, at around 10.5ft tall, I wouldn't want to put it on the roof and add extra height. What has been...

Any chance this contraption would work? Question about mounting a minisplit on my van

Thanks. That unit is 140lbs - that would be a lot of weight to put on the door hinges. However looks like "backwall truck AC" is a useful thing to Google, so I'll spend some time tonight seeing if there are any other options that are lighter and hopefully dont cost >$1K.

Any chance this contraption would work? Question about mounting a minisplit on my van

Do you happen to have a link to the wall mounted one? I am planning on using flex hoses, but in terms of vibration isolators there is room for improvement. The current version has the AC mounted on thick rubber pads, but there is also a flat steel piece that clamps it down as an extra safety...

Any chance this contraption would work? Question about mounting a minisplit on my van

The camper ACs on the market are significantly less efficient and noisier than mini splits. Many of those won't even start with my Honda EU2200, and would consume more fuel that I than need to bring with me. They're also more expensive than this minisplit. Separately, they all mount to the...

Any chance this contraption would work? Question about mounting a minisplit on my van

Yes, clamping is on the agenda :) With regards to the electronics not being meant for this - true, it probably won't last many years but I am okay with that. I'm hoping to get 3-5 out of it. Why is that? To put things in context, this is also my hobby so I am okay with it eventually breaking...
